The 41st NY (the de Kalb Regiment), 1st Bde, 1st Div, XI Corps was a depicted as a Zouave regiment by knotel. My MAA – 177 does not include that regt in its list of zouaves. Anybody else paint them as such? link |

For what it's worth, Wikipedia agrees that it was a Zouave regiment. And there's a picture of part of the regiment in the Time-Life ACW series, the Lee Takes Command volume. It's hard to see any details, but it's plain that the top and pants are the same color and there seems to be a wide belt or sash around several men. |

The images I've seen are primarily from 1861. The men are shown wearing NY State jackets with dark blue trousers. A number of the men are also wearing boots and some have gaiters (likely painted) that give the illusion of boots. There were a number of regiments designated as "zouave" which were supposed to receive that genre of uniform but which, for whatever reason, either never got them or only got, say, jackets of that type and wore the rest of the regulation clothing/uniform. I'll dig around in my archives a bit tomorrow and see if I can dig up anything else. |

Perhaps only one company or two companies out of the regiment wore Zouave uniforms? |

Take a look at 41st Regiment, New York Volunteers Civil War Newspaper Clippings link See the second paragraph of the first article regarding uniforms and then scroll down to the third list of companies which cites Company A as Zouaves. |

By the time of Gettysburg they were wearing the 'standard' Government issue Sack coat, trousers and Forage cap. Not sure when they made the switch. I have the regimental history but have not read it in years so
I forgot. :) Don |

Thanks for the quick responses. Perhaps I'll paint up a company worth of zouaves and have the rest in Sack Coat & Trousers or do the whole unit as they may have marched off in '61. Green jackets faced red with green caps and grey trousers. Thanks genew49 for that site. It's too cool. |

Thanks Rhino CO, the Museum itself is worth visiting if you're ever in Saratoga Springs, NY. After responding to your post I looked around a bit and found this: link |

genew49, from the photos in your link, it looks like their green jackets and grey trousers lasted less than a year |

A quick Google search produced a painting by Marcus Pierno that depicted the 41st by the 2nd Manassas, which had dark blue trousers and boots. genew49's photo essay appears to bear that out. Some of the enlisted have Prussian ammo pouches, epaulettes and German style marching boots. Perhapse some have retained the jacket and boots/leather gear. link genew49 thanks for the link to the photos. link |
