25mm bases are now 30mm with a lip around it
I have never liked them to begin with but they can be handy to give a little extra height to a figure, BCB pirates level up fine to Reapers if you use a base.

Um, no. 25mm bases are still 25mm.

A lot of it tends to depend upon the game they're used in.

I tend to prefer 30mm for skirmish level ones where you can have a wide variety of characters and other things that fit and tend to make each character more unique.

For larger systems, such as 40K, Warpath, or similar the 25mm works well for making it more of the battle than the individuals.

If facing is a part of the game, 30mm is a better option because it lets you add markings and similar to the base without taking away from the mini or basing itself.

25mm also works great if base size becomes an issue for mechanics. Things like the old Gorka Morka rules had it that you needed to fit your mob onto the transport vehicles which would be a right pain for 30mm…and sometimes difficult for 25, but there were some downright obnoxious things with that tiny base the starter set included…

You can get the traditional 25mm bases from Monday Knight Productions at a good price.

By definition 30mm bases are 30mm.

25mm still exists in many forms.
I prefer 30mm for the little bit of extra space for some nice basing opportunities.

Proxie Models makes some nice non-lipped (well, minimal lipped) bases. 25mm, too.

I throw away all large bases and I use 20mm washers for bases.

It's already difficult enough to make houses boats etc with 2cm+ wide stairs and passages, where the miniatures can stand everywhere on 20mm bases; no need to make them wider.

I use 1 inch washers. It takes the drama out of base selection.
