Using Thouroughbred Miniatures Barbary Pirates for Arab Slavers (great set, muskets, pistols, swords, and a few artillerymen, with great sculpts).

Any other ideas?

Blue Moon Askaris include 15 nice askaris in Fez (doing standard British style khaki uniforms, and some Force Publique style with blue shirts, white pantaloons), and 15 more figures in some weird turban with no shirts, rifle armed, good for different askaris but too uniform to be proper rugga rugga.

They should be musket armed and in diverse clothing, I would think.

Any suggestions?

For Baluchis, I have some nice OG 15s Arabs with hand weapons, wearing passable clothing and weapons.

Any other ideas?

I'm just a few units away from a great big darkest Africa set up. Need more figures!

Rebel Miniatures has some pulp 15mm that might be what you are looking for.

Old Glory 15s do some nice Sikhs. I use the turban wearing Blue Moon askaris as Zanzibaris.

Oh Bugger27 Mar 2014 3:11 a.m. PST

I'd be tempted to use these as Baluch.

The Minifigs Baluchis are from the North West Frontier range and represent regular Baluchi infantry of the 1890s Indian Army, so they're certainly not what you're looking for.

There was a query along the same lines a while ago, and I'll repeat my response to that plea: ERM has a range for the Bombay Marine campaigns against coastal Arabs in the early 19th century. The Arabs are costumed as per East African slavers; in fact, some of the figures are scaled down versions of the Copplestone DA Arabs.

Yeah forgot about them they do look nice.

Is there an echo in here…. an echo in here?

Rugga Rugga is a tricky one. They must be diverse ion arms and dress, methinks? Basically armed goons.

Oh Bugger27 Mar 2014 5:53 p.m. PST

Look at the first figure in either of the links for ERM he is clearly imo an African maybe the rest of the pack are too. If so you have your Rugga Rugga.

Actually, it's a down-sized version of one of the Foundry 'Baluchi' swordsmen in Arab costume, the Arab costume in question being that of the coastal fringe of the Arabian Peninsula, whence the Arabs of East Africa originated.

Oh that's interesting. So kilt and no turban was the drill?

Question aroused my curiosity so I went hunting and this is the best imagery I found:

Seems its pretty hard to find accurate images for rugga rugga. If you are doing the darkest africa era of the 1870s to 1890s looks like just about any African native figures might work – not so sure about anything India based being appropriate, similarly for Arabic types.

Henry Martini28 Mar 2014 6:44 p.m. PST

Well, some of the Foundry Baluchis in kilt are turbaned and some aren't – and where they are, it's a rather minimalist style of turban; in some cases not much more than a head band. I'm sure there must be an image somewhere on the Foundry website if you want to check them out.

Great stuff, guys, thanks. helped me complete my stuff!

I'm gonna pick and choose individual figures from different sets for Rugga Rugga, which are just hired goons, mostly, Some in semi uniform, some in native dress, anyone who is black and has a musket should do, right?
