Gentlemen, I have GHQ's rules which I find a bit complex, although I like how complete their equipment listing is. I have the free version of Fist Full of TOWs. Seems simpler, but not as complete an equipment listing and no rules for air support other than helicopters. Does Fist Full of TOWs have more vehicles included or new rules for close air support with aircraft with the paid for version? I had Cold War Commander, but did not care for them. Looking for something inclusive of equipment, but easy to play what suggestions are there? I do 6mm.

Try NATO Brigade Commander:

Or Modern Spearhead.

I think FFOT has a pretty massive equipment listing in the full game – at one time a spreadsheet of units was available as a download somewhere, and it had about a dozen versions of the T-80 alone.

Still using WRG's 1950-1985 set and loving it :)

Thank you all for your suggestions. I think I'll try the full version of FFT3, even though it pains me to pay so much for a rule set.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the full version of FFT3. If you enjoyed the free lite version, you'll enjoy the full version. It has a very comprehensive equipment list. They have rules for air support and helicopters in the full game as well. You will be getting your money's worth.

Vdal, Glad to hear it.

FFT3 is worth it… to answer your question… the equipment charts are very complete.

Spearhead is excellent as well. My club just finished the "Race to the Rhine" Campaign… great fun. We had one Soviet division never advance! Please note the Modern Spearhead is really aimed at one command level above the rest of these rules.

WRG is fun as well though it can be daunting at first look. It really is fairly simple in play. I also don't like Phil's representation of ATGM values vs armor. That is simple to change though. The game itself is quite fun.
(It is individual tanks… not platoons per stand.)

Finally, there is a mostly finished version of CD4 TOB for moderns on the website. We play tested an Arab Israeli game with it and were impressed.

Hope this helps…

For an authentic set of rules try 'Contact!' by the Canadian Army. Extracted and simplified from the WRG moderns set, but you do need a knowlegeable umpire…

The ATGM issue Joe refers to has also been addressed in this set using their intel data back in the day.

Available from John Curry's History of Wargaming project…
