Hi,
I'm quite interested in the new Donnybrook skirmish rules. I'm most interested in using them for ECW skirmishes or maybe gaming Border Reivers. Would they work for pre-1660 without modifications?
All the best,
George.

I haven't played my set yet but I can't see why not. I'm planning to use them for my rarely used ECW figured initially.

I guess you might need to tweak things a little but nothing dramatic. I believe they plan some additional supplements for earlier and later periods.

Bong67.
Donnybrook would work just fine for pre-1660. The fellows over at the League of Augsburg were keeping the period theme around the Grand Alliance through the WSS period. But the rules can work for later or earlier than the years noted without any modifications.

Definitely worth the buy!

Hi Alastair and Redmist
Thanks for your replies. What I'm hoping is that in a skirmish sense not much will be different from a fight in 1648 to one in 1660, it's only 12 years after all.
However, as the rules are nearly £30.00 GBP I don't want to buy them if they don't work for what I want. I can't see a problem though as in 1660 there would still be armoured pikemen and cavalry and matchlock muskets would still be common.
From what you've said I think they might be worth buying. At the moment I'm quite into small to medium skirmish gaming which can generate a good narrative so they could be good for me anyway.
All the best,
George

There's a fella in Sweden using them for the Scanian War,and he's adopted them for medieval stuff to, so might be worth looking at his blog, to see his thoughts on widening the scope.

hi , the rules work well for the Elizabethan wars in Ireland and the rule book has all the national characteristics for the troop types to individualise any game. We played the first game last week without any modifications as advised from the League of Augsburg site and it ran really as well as being surprisingly tactical. The modifications we thought might work were to increase the range for longbows and give a long range saving through for figures wearing metal armour who've been hit by black powder weapons to allow for shot proof breastplates etc. The game itself has no range modifiers so we thought anything over three quarters of the maximum range would be fair enough; we treat arquebus' as carbines.

The figures we used are from from Crann Tara which are excellent and Graham is expanding the original range. i know there's more Gallowglass on the way followed by Irish cavalry and hopefully some demilancers will be next. Here's the link:

Hi Pete,
Thanks for that info and thanks to everyone else too. I think Donnybrook will go on my shopping list for the Carronade show in May if I don't get it sooner. I play a lot of Pulp Alley and had thought of using it for 16th-17th Century skirmishes. I will probably still do so but I think Donnybrook will let me do larger games.
I also have my eye on those Cran Tara Reivers, they're beautiful.
All the best,
George.

Hi,
Well I couldn't wait until the Carronade show so ordered a copy from North Star.
It arrived yesterday and my first impressions are great. The rules look simple and fun and will be very suitable for Border Reivers or ECW. I can't wait to try them.
Thanks once again to everyone.
All the best,
George.
