With all the flashbacks of the Cold War going on recently, I was wondering, if any of you have seen THE AMERICANS. fxnetworks.com/theamericans A Series on FX. It's about 2 Russian [Sleeper] Agents in the US in the '60s-'70s. It is not a documentary, but an interesting bit of historical based fiction. Don't know the accuracy of it, as I don't know if the rumors of Russian deep cover agents during the Cold War are true … but many of us thought so. And it is from the Russian point of view … And for those of you who like Spy Games and figures like Copplestone's "Kiss, Kiss Bang, Bang", link this certainly provides some gaming fodder. And Barin1, I'd be interested if you saw it [on DVD] and your thoughts. It's in it's 2d Season …

I watch it and like it. To be honest, last season was a slow build for me, but this season was riveting from the get-go. The show definitely takes me back to my childhood, in a weird way. I do love the show though, and make sure not to miss it.

Even I am enjoying it.

There were tons of spies here, and I suspect most were never caught.

I suspect the number of people killed in the show is a bit North of average that can really be attributed to the "Cold War" spy games, in order to make the show action-packed.

Well written, and certainly interesting, if you can get beyond some of the silly, political statements by the writers, e.g. one quote by a left-leaning character in the show "Reagan doesn't care….".

I feel the same ! Sometimes it seems like I'm "root'n" for the Russkies ! huh? wink

PapaSync20 Mar 2014 9:47 a.m. PST

Same here. I've been watch it from day one. I love the old skool cars, phone, outfits, etc. Nicely put together show. It's on my DVR list.

Great show, my favourite on TV at the moment.

Mako11, a character making a statement doesn't mean that the writers believe it.

I'll have to keep an eye out for this when it appears in the UK. My favourite sleeper series was the excellent "Sleepers".

I like the series but it does get a little old when every American male is portrayed as willing to betray his country for a little slap and tickle, or at best as clueless. After watching each episode I just remind myself which country still exists…

Ironwolf20 Mar 2014 3:11 p.m. PST

hahaha, very true Moke but its been proven that russia's tactic to use "honey pots" worked very well. So I can understand why its used so much in the show.

Greg G120 Mar 2014 3:47 p.m. PST

Huscarle, it's on ITV1 on Saturday nights, the second season started last weekend. The whole 1st season was repeated a few weeks ago. Saturdays episode is on the ITVplayer.

Yes, the "honey pot" was supposed to be a very effective tactic … probably still is …

Buck21520 Mar 2014 6:16 p.m. PST

Love this show!

Martin Rapier20 Mar 2014 11:37 p.m. PST

Yes, great fun, watched the first series on TV and the second has just started.

boy wundyr x21 Mar 2014 7:09 a.m. PST

Dear Russia, I'm more than willing to fall for the honey pot ploy, please send me two.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP21 Mar 2014 7:31 a.m. PST

Indeed … but you may have to give up state secrets ! wink Snowden did it and didn't even get a honey pot, AFAIK ! huh?

Barin122 Mar 2014 4:41 a.m. PST

Heard about it, but never seen it. Normally, we tend to show our opponents in a way that makes the other side laugh…so if in Game of Thrones you don't know how Lanister was in real life ;)) in history or contemporary events you just can't shake it off. Good if it is self-parody, like Red Heat, but if Russians are starting acting like Arnie in their average working day it's not going to work…however…you're not making these series for us, so the producers have to consider the ratings…

Like I said, sometimes I'm hoping the Russians complete their mission ! huh? And I'm an old Cold War Warrior type ! But that being said, I'd be interested in a real Russian's point of view. You may find it interesting to see how the Russians are portrayed. By the way, for the most part many liked Arnie in Red Heat ! I liked the movie ! The interaction between the East and West cops was probably cliche'. But entertaining regardless … So anyway if given the chance, you may want to watch "THE AMERICANS" … and give us your review … wink

Barin122 Mar 2014 7:25 a.m. PST

We liked Arnie in Read Heat pretty much…cliché or not, he was a hero, and he was Russian fighting evil – unlikely combination in these days. I'm taking your advice..think I can get the series somewhere ;)

Cool !!! thumbs up Let us know what you think !

Buck21530 Jun 2015 2:39 p.m. PST

If you like "The Americans" (and I do!) you will also like the new series "Deutschland 83" which involves the East German spies imbedding themselves into West Germany to spy on the NATO forces. Saw the first episode and it was impressive. The Independent Film Channel (IFC) airs it. In German with English subtitles…

tuscaloosa30 Jun 2015 6:48 p.m. PST

A couple decades ago, I read a Russian spy novel, a classic espionage tale, in which the good guys were the KGB and the bad guys were the CIA. I started losing interest after reading a scene which took place in a McDonalds, and after the characters took seats at a table, a waiter showed up to take their order…

That does sound pretty good Buck ! I'll have to keep my eyes open for it. Yes, I could see why Tuscaloosa, something as simple as that fact should be easy to assess. So like in many cases it would make you doubt many of the other things that are said and done in the rest of the book.
