Howdy all, I was wondering if there was a book for ACW as Chandler is for Napoleonics? Lookin' to get into ACW, and if there isn't "THE" book, what about books to cover most/all theaters? Sorry if this has already been brought up, but I couldn't find one searching |

Shelby Foote is a great story teller and will certainly give you the taste of the ACW but his "history" can be suspect. If you want that type of material then he is your man. For a current and popular history of the war I would highly recommend James M. McPherson, "Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era" As a one volume edition it is an excellent introduction to the period and has enough on tactics and battles to keep the gamer involved. If there is a "The" Book on the ACW this could be it link Another good historical author is Noah Andre Trudeau I particularly like his trilogy on the last year of the war "Bloody Roads South: The Wilderness to Cold Harbor, May-June 1864 ", "The Last Citadel: Petersburg, Virginia June 1864-April 1865" and "Out of the Storm: The End of the Civil War, April-June 1865" link |

Another vote for "Battle Cry of Freedom." It is the best single volume available. |

Concur. McPherson is excellent. Cozzens is great for the Union in the West. Trudeau is wonderful. Coddington for Gettysburg, hands down. Foote has the most readable narrative, but I think the above are better as history. Eric |

Concur in all the above BUT – being an older guy, I still dip into Bruce Catton's 3 volume history of the Army of the Potomac for flavor, history, a recounting of events peculiar to that army, etc. Catton's work on Grant is also among my favorites. |

IMHO the best on ACW is US author and Military Historian Stephen Sears. |

Bruce Catton's Centennial edition of the American Heritage Civil War from the 1960s. Without a doubt the BEST volume on the American Civil War. The prose, pictures, illustrations and maps set the standard. Do not waste your time with the McPherson reprint. It cannot hold a candle to the Catton edition. Though McPherson's "Battle cry of Freedom" is worth it. |
