I love GW's Lord of the Rings series games, but to me it's pretty much a skirmish game where formations in battles don't really matter that much and it's hard to simulate big battles (Isen Ford, Pelennor Fields, Five Armies, etc.). I was wondering if there are rules and suitable (i.e., generic fantasy infantry, orcs, elves, etc.) 10-mm scale minis à la Warmaster available?

Warmaster is the perfect vehicle for playing LOTR mass combat battles. The Yahoo! Group for Warmaster (gw-warmaster) has many documents related to replaying the larger battles in Middle-Earth using the Warmaster rules, including supplemental rules, army lists, scenarios and the like.

The GW Warmaster minis are fantastic, IMO. If you don't care for the look of the "strip" style they're modled in (I actually prefer them as they are MUCH easier to paint than figs cast individually and give more of a mass-ranks feel), I'd suggest you check out Irregular. The have a nice selection of Tolkein-esque figures in 10mm scale. East Riding Miniatures has just released a new range of miniatures in 15mm scale specifically for LOTR (although they're not saying that exactly for obvious reasons). I know there are other companies out there as well, and I'm sure someone will chime in and let you know who they are ;)

ERM LOTR range? No….. just another 15mm fantasy range ;-)

Well, the first batch is out anyway (except for FT7 and FT11 – they will be going into production moulds on Monday). More to come in due course.

Cheers,

Tony

Hello all... I play both 15mm and 25mm. The rules I use the most is Armies of Arcana. It has a very natural feel to them which increases the flow of the game. The best part of the game outside of playability is the ability to custom create an army if it is not already listed ( more than 16 armies can be found both in the book as well as the website ). You can get more information at www.thanesgames.com.

Oops! I must have been mistaken, Tony. My apologies. Still, I think your new range would be "servicable" in a LOTR type miniatures game ;)

Can't wait to see the pics!

Pendraken also produces a 10mm fantasy line(pretty large actually)

There is an entire group devoted to Middle Earth
Warmaster. Welcome to groups.yahoo.com/group/middle_earth_warmaster
(it is also linked from the gw-warmaster main group).
We're about to freeze the army lists for Rohan, Gondor (Imperial and Late), Isengard, Easterlings, Harad, Tribal Orcs (like Moria). Next in line (but pretty much finished) are Mordor, Dol Goldur, Angmar, Dwarves, Lorien, Rivendell. Then come Noldor Princedoms and Gondolin (which I consider finished as well, but it hasn't really been discussed). I have a draft for Angband, but that's really still very shaky. Complete scenarios exist for 1st, 2nd Isen, Five Armies, Hornburg, Azanulbizar. It's all in the archives.

Miniatures are discussed constantly, some painted examples are in the Photos section.

Come and join the fun!

Use your Warmaster with your 28mm, just double the scale.

Fantasy Rules! is great for this in 15mm. LotR army lists and scenarios can be found at:

In 15mm Black Raven Foundry (from Old Glory) makes suitable figures and they are VERY reasonable. It can be supplemented by 15mm Old Glory Historical figs for Rohan and Gondor.

Now that GW have the rights to produce minis from the books (LOTR and The Hobbit) as well as the films, I did hear that they will be bringing out a Warhampster-based LOTR range and ruleset.

Sometime??!!!

If you want a more "Dark Age" feel to your battles you could try the GW fig.'s with the "Comitatus" rules, an excellent set - just use 1 figure (or 2-4 figures) = 1 base. It looks okay, but 10mm mass might be better ... only the GW fig.s look *so* nice!

***Rumour control***

Sunjester,

I assume that you are only relating hearsay (probably
something you've picked up on the internet, eh?).
Don't do that, unless you have evidence (in that case
ignore this message and post your references, please!);
let's not turn this place into another out-of-control
rumour mill.

The idea of GW producing a mass combat system for
Middle Earth has been around on the 'net and inside GW
studio people's minds since the first day
they got the licence, but as far as I know there
are no confirmed plans.

"The most fascinating thing about the Internet isn't
the amount of information you can find, but the number
of people who actually believe what they read there."

Hehe, funny quote, Happy Ent. Wonder how many people will walk away and blithely repeat it to others?

Javier Barriopedro aka DokZ16 Nov 2002 10:57 p.m. PST

Wha...?!?!!?

Oh, man! I nearly choked with that one, Happy Ent.

Now, I must clean all the Coca-Cola out of my monitor's screen.

Sheeesh!

Happy Ent17 Nov 2002 11:15 a.m. PST

The first version of the quote I saw attributed it
to Alan Turing, which is much funnier and more subtle,
but also wasted on a large part of today's Internet
community (oh for the days where only geeks like me
used the net!). So if you want to use the quote to
spread some more misinformation consider attributing
it to Turing instead of Einstein. This may also increase
its chance for getting 'blithely repeated,' since most
people see through the Einstein label after a few
seconds of serious brainwork.

Otherwise one could always pin it on Wilde, of course.
