Right!

It is long overdue and so I will bring out some sci-fi city buildings that are not gothic!
(Go L4 you do that little dance!)

I will do a crowdfunding project as I simply don't have the funds to invest in an entire new range in one go.

The rough plan is to make some of the buildings modular and stackable.
So you will have say a city block ground section, with doors and what not and a roof section with err err the roof!
In between will be a middle section, you can add as many or as few of these as you want.

The design will be smooth, rounded and sloped.
No straight lines on the buildings where possible.

Think Mega-City One.

picture

But less huge and more practical!

I was thinking of making this a very small project without a million stretch goals.
I want to keep it small and manageable and make the target something that is likely to be met.

I have some ideas in my head and I have spoken to the Digital Sculptor that did my OKI buildings and he is on board.

So… Your feedback..

I was thinking of:

A small shop
A modular city block (3 core pieces)
A different modular city block (3 core pieces)
A medium municipal building
A factory of some sort

Now that is only 5 buildings but it is 9 pieces.
The shop can be painted in various ways so that you can have a row of them and they will look different.
The modular stackable blocks can be arranged in various heights so that whilst the same pieces, they all look different.
Again the municipal building can be painted so that it is a hospital or a town hall or or…
Just add the appropriate sign/statue/vehicles out the front.
Same with the factory.

Not a lot, but I want to keep the project small and be sure I can deliver than have a gazillion models and not be able to get them made.

You should have enough variants to make a convincing city with the bits.

If of course people go bonkers for it then I can use the excess funds to make more buildings available through the website later on.
Or start a new project and have a lower target and use the cash from the previous one.

Anyway, that is the plan for much later this year.

Okay, sounds good, lets see the KS/more details as you get them in 3D.

Just like the old GZG 6mm buildings, eh?

Just like the old GZG 6mm buildings, eh?

Dunno, maybe, quite possibly.
I would be astounded to think I was the first to come up with this idea, so yes, quite possibly.
Got any links to images?

I actually got the idea when playing Connect 4!

:D

The gzg stuff is from Daemonscape now isn't it?

Anyway a great project, maybe keep the shop front in a modular flat face and have several variants to glue/fix onto the main structure……big windows like a supermarket and smaller bar type or more 'secure' in style……literally a shop front, rectangular in shape with variant windows and doors etc…….fairly easy to cast? Just an idea………….

MB beat me with the pic!

Angel Barracks14 Mar 2014 3:49 a.m. PST

Yeah kind of like those MB.
Though being digital sculpts they will be smoother and more uniform. (hopefully)
Without being mean, a bit more polished. (all being well)
Also no integral bases.

A modern take on it if you will.

Sounds excellent. Go for it, sir!

Can't argue with those ideas; Would add that a couple of transport hub/station pieces wouldn't go amiss either. Somewhere for buses and other long distance ground vehicles, and maybe a VTOL/heliport?

I'm not a fan of straight sided buildings myself, and having lived among ziggurat and A-frame buildings here in NZ, like this one

picture
I dislike the dearth of those in model form. Any thoughts there AB?

Angel Barracks14 Mar 2014 4:43 a.m. PST

I want to keep smooth and rounded as there is not a lot out there like that.
Plus smooth is much easier to cast and will help the moulds last longer.

Straight edges are easy to make by hand.
But I am going digital and printing, so I think it makes sense to get the most out of the technology I shall be using, or why bother using it?

how about aerial archways to connect tiers of the highrise buildings? & yes I read Dredd too :)

Paint it Pink14 Mar 2014 5:47 a.m. PST

Will you be able to put troops inside the building? If so then I'll be interested, if not, then less so.

No. Solid resin pieces, sorry.

It would be really cool if these buildings were to compliment your KR16 setting. Say as a main spaceport or the like.

It's nitpick time !

That 2000AD piccie show's Tex-City, not Mega City 1.

The giant cowboy statue and the hall of justice with a stetson on are the big give aways architecturally.

Oh, and when you say

I want to keep smooth and rounded as there is not a lot out there like that.
you were talking about the buildings, weren't you….? I hope….

I know.
I care not.
Anyway, the real giveaway is where it says 'TEXAS CITY!'

Don't care was made to care

Don't care was hung

Don't care was put in a pot

And boiled until he was done.

Just saying wink

I'm interested, but not convinced. I have a few of the futuristic 6mm urban highrise buildings from Old Crow, and although they have a cool aesthetic (rounded and ultra-modern/futuristic), I'm annoyed that they're not quite big enough (IMHO, YMMV and all that). They're clearly supposed to be "city center" type highrise buildings, but when taken to be in scale with 6mm figures, I feel they have a somewhat miniaturized look to them. I have a difficult time imagining decent-sized offices or apartments inside of them – an effect which is hardly alleviated by their rounded-but-narrow shapes (not very space-effective). Simply making them bigger might be impractical for other reasons (higher production & shipping costs, not as easy to store, etc) which is probably why the designer/sculptor at Old Crow opted to make them relatively small. So there might simply not be a satisfying solution to this issue.

Another thing is that urban buildings tend to require more urban buildings (preferably with plenty of variety) if they're not going to look out of place, along with other urban features like raised roadways, tunnels, numerous civilian vehicles, etc. While I don't care at all for "gothic ruins" type urban battlefields, I fear there may be a good reason people keep sticking to these. Covering a table with "scrappy"-looking gothic ruins is comparatively easy.

I would LOVE to be proven wrong. Preferably on someone else's dime than mine grin

Michael. If you build it they will come. Hoooo (Puts head in hands). If you build a city I don't think I will be able to resist 6mm any longer. No scratch that I know I will not be able to resist. It would be great if it matches in with your current buildings to a degree. I really like the sound of what you are planning. I need a nice city for my 1/285 (or what ever it is)falcon to land. I have been thinking doing a city in 15mm will be just to massive but if you are doing one in 6mm I am in. Just try to keep cost down. :-) That's it then I am doing sci-fi in 6mm as well as 15mm. Well the money I save on doing 15mm instead of 28mm can go towards the 6mm city. Count me in. Sorry for the long ramble. :-)

Space Monkey14 Mar 2014 9:55 a.m. PST

I like the Old Crow buildings… except for the modular towers I figured they were mostly remote outposts or military installations… not so much urban skyscrapers.
Some Dredd inspired buildings would certainly appeal to me… especially if the have a modular mix-n-match aspect going on… with maybe a line of widgets that can be added to give character/function.

Gaz004514 Mar 2014 10:42 a.m. PST

Stealth1000- I can see your resistance crumbling as I read that post!!!LOL!!!!!!
You know you want the preciousssssss!!!!

Stealth100014 Mar 2014 11:11 a.m. PST

@ Gaz0045. I know resistance futile. I have succumbed to the allure of 6mm. Working out my order now for next month pay cheque. :-)

(… finishes happy dance)

Mega City 1 inpired buildings? Sign me up!!!

you could do the stackable buildings with a connector plate ala the Ion Age Hab Dome, that would make it easier to add balconies and raised walkways/bridges later. I also like the widget line idea to allow more customisation.

Nandalf14 Mar 2014 4:30 p.m. PST

I am in!

And 15mm ;)

Look ad Wasteland Game Studio 6mm-scale Wargame Buildings on Kickstarter:
link

Angel Barracks17 Mar 2014 4:58 a.m. PST

I am aware of that one thanks.
However it is nothing like what I am proposing really, they are quite square, blocky and dare I say it… Gothic!

I have a name at least for my CS project.

Wow Wasteland Game is making Gothic type buildings !!!! huh? Who would have thought !!!!?

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP21 Mar 2014 5:35 a.m. PST

Those Wasteland models are very nice, but hopefully AB can bring theirs in for under $20 USD Canadian each (basic backer is 3 buildings $49 USD +$10 shipping). That seems a lot, to me anyway. These link for example are tons cheaper (and I like'em as well !).

Covert Walrus26 Mar 2014 4:02 p.m. PST

OK, if this is waht you are thinking of – link

– then I'm in !

precinctomega30 Mar 2014 11:41 a.m. PST

I'm really interested. I love my current small collection of OKI buildings and fancy adding some more. Something I've learned from a lot of 6mm gaming, now, though, is that the best buildings for 6mm are modular. That is, they should go together so that you can either have them stand on their own – to represent a farming complex, small research base or military barracks – or they can be placed seamlessly together to represent much bigger buildings – like proper city blocks, with interesting shapes and multiple levels for rooftops etc.

If you can design them like that, I'd be all over these.
