Pretty much the most 'realistic' mecha game I've seen is DP9's Heavy Gear.

Heavy Gear appeals to me too on the basis that it feels "real", even if all the details aren't worked out there is something right about Gears.

Those Heavy Gears were more or less copied from the anime AT Votoms, which DP9 has credited as the influence.

I think AT Votoms and Blue Gender were created by the same guy.

Votoms is a pretty good series, and treats the mecha pretty much as super-heavy infantry. There's still tanks, helos, etc, and even unarmored infantry. But most of the combat action is between Armored Troopers.

Votoms also have secondary movement systems, more-or-less powered roller skates. And they pretty much OWN built-up areas and jungles due to their much better maneuverability and ability to hide behind cars and even low buildings.

I think AT Votoms and Blue Gender were created by the same guy.
They were. Another series he was involved in was Gasaraki. Gasaraki is a bit odd, one of the climactic fights in the series is not shown from the bystander's POV (where you can see what's going on), but from the pilot's POV, where you don't see most of the action.

And I ripped my idea for the piloting method straight from Gasaraki. Weapons came from DP9's Heavy Gear.
