You have one of the greatest collection of 28mm ancients around. I've admired your work for some time, thanks for posting. You even inspired me to get back into ancients.

That's a beautiful unit! His stuff always looks like Dioramas to me, great eye appeal.

Simon, great looking figures!!!!!!!!!!!! Cheers Mike

Fantastic stuff as usual Simon. That is a bold basing decision. What size grid do you use for your rules? Do you plan to sell the rules commercially?

Bob in Edmonton11 Mar 2014 2:19 p.m. PST

Wow. And what is the blonde guy with the sword using as a conditioner to get such body in his hair? Probably lead-based stuff from China.

Caliban11 Mar 2014 2:33 p.m. PST

Oh yeah

Well done again Simon. Must paint up my Celts, have a similar mix, with some Relic veterans for 'colour'. Like the idea of tacking on another large base at the rear for a proper warband.

Was planning the same for some imitation legionaries based for Hail Caesar – fleshing them out to 24 man units, with the front 16 on a single base and the rest to allow for casualty removal in say WAB.

Base is possibly your best yet. Different types and size of grass etc. is amazingly realistic.
Love the shields and blond hair on guy on right is very well done.
Finally who wants single figures stuck on a clumsy movement tray when you have this!

Thanks chaps! A mate has just helpfully pointed out that the new improved basing style, has made all my existing units obsolete. ;-)

Delbruck, these are based 18cm wide for use with a 20cm grid, which I use with most of my armies. There will be another 2 ranks behind them, making the units 48 strong. I have previously made similar bases 12cm wide for use with a smaller 15cm grid. I am intending to publish the rules later this year; the development is quite advanced.

Colin, I sculpted the blond hair on that chap, it looks like a syrup and fig! :-)

Second unit posting tomorrow…

Cheers, Simon

PS Hi Mike!

I am just reading Hail Caesar and making plans for my BlackTree Celts and Romans. I think your basing looks really great as well as the painting. I would really like to copy your style but doubt they will turn out as good as yours.

Does anyone know who makes the gent holding the spear-mounted skull? Thanks!

He's a Renegade, now OOP, I'm afraid. The skull/spear is a conversion. Thanks chaps!
