I'm a freelance sculptor, but also I'd like to start my personal 28 mm sci-fi line, NOT based upon wh40k.

The job is very time consuming (I'm not a fast sculptor), so must be profitable, so much to consenting me to live decently (around 2000/1500 euro per month).

the problem is this market appear very difficult to understood. To many little companies and only a bigger company who rule all. I starting think there is a company for every hobbyist. Is very hard to decide if investing or not, how much investing and, most important, if worth investing.

So, from your experience, worth dedicating time on it, in particular if you have not interest in follow GW style?
I understood is a complex question, and the
business risk cannot be shared and variables are too much, but I would to understood what is the actual market health status

The problem is exactly this: a lot of small companies. probably the entry threshold is too low, this make hard understood if this company work and are really in business or hobbyists infatuated with the products they produce (be clear I have nothing against, only this make very hard understood the market.

a. starting with an established but smaller company who might be willing to assist with costs based on the skill you bring to the team. If successful, you can always split off later.

can you elaborate this point?

About kickstarter, I'm Italian, so cannot use it, also, Italy is not exactly best country for miniatures.

I doing only sculpt, for cast the model I'll use some company. About selling and volume, for gain something for living probably not less than 400 models per month (selling it for 4/5 euro each), and I don't know if is a unrealistic or realistic objective.

Thank very much for your answer Terrence, can look previews here: link

40k inspired miniatures are pretty much everywhere, and I would say it's flooded. Regardless of your sculpting talents you may find it hard to get attention in that space.

McWong, he said NOT based upon 40K

Ciuccio, you might want to talk to the guys at Baueda or fireforge (especially Fireforge as they are ex GW producing 28 mm figures). Both Italian figure manufacturers. I bet they could give you better, more local advice.

I thought he may be using the not term, like doing a range of "Not" Predator figures, indicating the opposite. Rereading the op it's clear I was wrong.

The thing to do is do some and see if there is an interest in your designs.
