A new drama on BBC "37 Days", looks interesting. "The British Foreign Office, led by foreign secretary Sir Edward Grey, receives news of an assassination in the Balkans

Just been watching the first one. Agree it looks promising, but why do the foreign characters have to speak with an accent when supposedly speaking their own languages to each other? |

It was great to see the 'Emperor' as Edward Grey. |

I thought the Germans and Austrians are actually played by German actors, which is why they have an accent
? |

VCR- just looked at cast list, seems you are correct. In that case, I'd rather have subtitles! |

but why do the foreign characters have to speak with an accent when supposedly speaking their own languages to each other? So that the English speaking viewers understand what they are saying! |

Major Bumsore, I manage perfectly well watching Danish, Swedish, French, Italian, Belgium and many other non-English actors when the film uses SUBTITLES. In my view, accented English, when characters are supposed to be speaking German, Hungarian, Swahili or whatever does nothing for the authenticity of the programme. It reminds me of the worst sort of '60's "B" movie villains. I think the BBC could have done it better. |

Major Bumsore, I manage perfectly well watching Danish, Swedish, French, Italian, Belgium and many other non-English actors when the film uses SUBTITLES. Absolutely, and so do I. But the fact remains that British TV rarely if ever uses that method to provide greater authenticity. I have no idea why. |

The tension reminds me of the build-up of tension in 'Tora! Tora! Tora!'. |

Pity that we can't see it over on this side of the pond. Getting BBC America to bring it this kind of programming is a lost cause. Oh well, I guess 'Survivor' will have to do (oh aren't we soooo lucky
.). |

Major I know quite a number of people who cannot handle subtitles and hence I suspect this may be why they are avoided in UK made TV. |
