…engineer vehicles.

"The first four new and improved M9 Armored Combat Earthmovers have arrived on Camp Lejeune, N.C. They might look the same from the outside, but the legacy armored tractors have been completely overhauled.

The M9 ACE is a highly mobile, armored tracked vehicle that provides combat engineer support to front-line Marine forces. Its capabilities include eliminating enemy obstacles, maintaining and repairing roads and supply routes, and construction of fighting positions.

Y'know, I was with a Combat Engineer Battalion for Desert Storm.

We had a few M9's. The engineers thought they were a real POS.

Not enough armor and underpowered were the primary complaints. Could not finish a dirt-moving job in teh Saudi desert they started without calling on other HE to mop up.

Hope these improvements do the thing to instill more confidence and make them worth their salt.

Anyways, my second-hand two cents.

I was an Army combat engineer, although I never drove an ACE, and the main problems we saw with the vehicle were the tracks being too narrow (they would dig themselves into the ground) and the operator not being able to see what he was doing when he was buttoned up. The thing really needs exterior cameras to show the driver what the heck is going on outside his vehicle.

We had 'em in our Engineer Unit with 3d ACR most of the time Deadlined due to engine/track issues of broken support arms for the blades….The earth pigs didn't like them…

Yeah, whoever thought that aluminum sprockets and roadwheels was a good idea…!

Roadwheels I would believe, and think would work pretty well. But aluminum drive sprockets?!?

Somebody needs to turn the joker who had that brainstorm into a track mechanic for a couple years…
