Hello TMP, My Google-foo has failed me again. I am in search of 1/2" blank counters, as found in many wargames. I tried to find them at a few online shops (Chessex, etc.) but they are all 'out of stock'. Any other stockists or sources that you know of? I would prefer plain white counters, but I can make due with various colored counters if need be. Thank you in advance to all who reply

Looks like Noble Knight Games has them, as does Wargame Depot. Also many of the bigger boardgame companies (e.g. GMT) should probably have them available (even if they're not readily apparent on the websites). edit – actually, it appears the ones at Wargame Depot ARE from GMT. :) Doug |

Dear Lou from BSM Why not make your own with a steel-rule, some Bristol Plate and a utility knife? I do it all the time. |

Making your own can be very annoying, but it depends on what you're trying to do. Gluing "faces" onto pre-die-cut counters is annoying and time-consuming. Worse, the curve at the edges of the counters means that the faces tend to peel up. Printing a complete sticky sheet and pressing it down on pasteboard is pretty easy. The cutting can seem very difficult, but there are tricks. One is to get a rotary cutter, especially a rotary cutter board. Sometimes these are very cheap at crafts stores (scrapbooking places). If you cut by hand, you need a good straight edge to cut against and an X-Acto with new, sharp blades. Do not press hard when you cut. Make quick, relatively soft cuts again and again. You do not cut effectively if you are trying to puncture the pasteboard. It's the slicing/razoring action that's so effective. If your hand starts to cramp or tire, you are pressing too hard. Do not press hard when you cut. |

If making single sided counters vinyl floor tiles (with the pre-stick backs) are great. Print, stick to tile, cut. If you have a swing arm cutter it is easy, otherwise a good heavy pair of scissors works well. |

All good responses
thank you. Doug, I'll take a look at the Depot as that is what I am looking for specifically. My goal is to mount some printed sheets (printed on sticky back paper) and press them onto the blanks to add some units to existing board games. Paul, your idea with the vinyl tile is excellent!!! I can get seconds from my local flooring store for pennies. I will try this as a mounting medium for my Sail & Steam Navies ship counters. Thank you again gentlemen!!! |

If paying a little more isn't a problem, "Troll and Toad" puts 1/2" and 5/8" counters up on eBay regularly. GMT seems to be the current source for both sizes, most of the original makers having been out of the business for years. Chessex haven't actually made any counters for years (decades?). Kind of collectors items, when you can find them. Duck |
