in osprey Rommel's Desert army it says the Italians might have worn grey in the winter in north Africa. so could you use grey uniformed Italians in the desert war?

Hi,
In the 1940-41 Italian invasion of Egypt and the subsequent British counter-offensive into (most Of) Libya a good number of Italian troops were still in the European grey uniforms due to the massive amounts of troops involved.
Also, in the end phase in Tunisia, a great number of Italian troops who were supposed to be sent to Russia were hurriedly diverted to Tunisia while still clothed in the European grey uniform.
You are also not wrong to show troops wearing a mix of uniform items too, grey tunic with sand trousers and so on.
Hope this helps.

I seem to remember reading that the Italians had a lightweight grey 'work' uniform used in Europe. It was not the same colour as the grey-green 'battle' uniform.

Possibly this is the grey uniform referred to?

I wouldn't be at all surprised. It gets very cold at night and in the winter in North Africa .Commonwealth troops regularly wore their woolen battle dress and greatcoats to keep warm, so I expect the axis troops had the same problems.

The Italians did have a grey fatigue uniform, totally apart from the grey-green one

I believe there are colour photographs showing this…

I have a unit history of the Italian Reconnaissance Group/Regiment "Lido", which describes how that unit was transported to North Africa bit by bit in late 1941 through mid 1942 (the battalions going separately, and in some cases individual companies or batteries being shipped over in separately).

The first units received their proper distribution of "tropical" kit (sand-colored cotton light-weight) when they were alerted for transport. Later units did not … they were alerted for transport and shipped with the kit they had … the continental (gray-green woolen) kit. Replacements of worn kit were almost always continental.

At least that's how I understand it. My language skills in Italian are VERY limited.
