The South London Warlords slwarlords.blogspot.co.uk salute.co.uk took the final part of their Route 66 game to the Hammerhead show. The trilogy of games started at Salute 2013 link with the 36 foot long rush down the eponymous Route 66 to Clyde city by two detachments of Slammers and some allies. They only got to the outskirts of the city.

picture

Colours in 2013 link saw the attack into Clyde city itself with a smaller game some half the size of the Salute game. In that scenario the Slammers had to park a vehicle out side of the main administrative offices of the city and they succeeded… just.

picture

But – as so often happens in war – the territory gained was subsequently lost again and the Hammerhead game saw the Slammers retaking Clyde City with a pincer attack. This time – to make sure they didn't have to do this all over again – the Slammers needed to park a vehicle outside of three buildings in the city and they formed a pincer attack to do so.

picture

The game took place at the excellent 'everything's a participation game' Hammerhead in it's new venue at the Cedric Hall Pavilion at Newark Showground and a jolly good time was had by all.

picture

The game used the Ainsty Blowers, Khurasan based Antargran Army and Brigade based West Riding Yeomanry plus the usual assortment of buildings and terrain. It also featured a 'beta test' of a new Slammer's Token set to be released by Figures in Comfort which has an acrylic widget to mark all of the leadership points, damage results and weapon loss markings that you may want to use, plus two different sorts of explosions for destroyed (and completed vapourised!) vehicles.

picture

Needless to say, the game used Hammer's Slammers: The Crucible rules. It lso won a prize on the day, which was nice!

Dog goneit! The IT dept. has your site blocked. It's classified as games. Doesn't happen with all miniature gaming sites though. I guess I'll have to check it out on my phone.

I hate IT departments (or – more accurately – the mindless algorithms that they sub-contract their decision making to…).

They do the same thing to me at work…

IMHO this is the very standard of presentation we should all try and shoot for when we put on a convention game, whether it us open to the public or not! Bravo, John & coconspirators! evil grin

I agree! gaming with miniatures is/should be about the spectacle. if I didn't want the spectacle, I'd be using cardboard counters on a hexmap!

Bravo, John & coconspirators!
Hear, hear! BZ for a job well done!

To John and the team,
congrats on the prize well deserved.
I'm with Leland and the rest of the guys with this: keep setting the standard.
Hope to catch you round what's left of the uk convention circuit .

John, you are probably bored of this by now but deal with that; 'Well Done'.

It is the standard I am shooting for.

Thanks,

Pat

Thankyou all kindly for – as ever – the very nice comments.

Good models from good sculptors (Steve for Ainsty, Tony at Brigade and JBR for Khurasan) all help, as do decent buildings (for the most part [beyond my scratch built stuff]) from Kato and the display boards (OK, mostly my work) add to it and make it easier at the same time.

For my part, I'm trying hard to demonstrate that you can paint this stuff quickly to a reasonable standard to put on this sort of game but – to be frank – I've seen what L4, Patrick, Leland and many of the others who comment on the TMP threads I post can achieve with a brush and all I can say is that we can all do this stuff and most of you could do it better than me – I no longer have the patience to paint vehicles with out filters, washes, inks and dips, let alone some of the work I've seen here (Mr Harold and his air brush, for gawd sake: cleaning it would give me a seizure, never mind using it!).

I've seen some of your games too and y'all have nothing but good stuff on your sites. "Shooting for" it Pat? I've seen your blog: you've already filled it so full of lead* it's dead and buried!

I'm just glad to be a part of something that, based on Drake's work, has resonated with as many people as it has.

That's why I'm trying to put peoples' work up on the Slammer's site too (like the stuff I just re-pulblished from Tony at Brigade). I figure it's a team effort: it's just that the 'team' are spread across the globe.

Thank you for the encouragement gentlemen.

PS – I found the FiC counters really helpful. If he can just reduce the size of the missile counters alot they'll make playing easier. I've recommended he sells them in basic detachment packs with some of each type in them plus additional specialist ones, but that's up to Erik at FiC

John,
Thanks for the kind comments on what we agreed were beta prototype tokens and markers for Hammers Slammers.
Work will be done on these as we discussed (smaller missiles) and they will be packaged and launched for sale at Salute later this year. (pre-order by contacting Figures In Comfort. Sorry for the sales plug!)
Well done putting on another spectacular game.

Great looking game Jon :) like everyone said it's well spectacular!

I'm glad the markers worked well and Erik please put me down for a couple of sets for salute :)

I'm just glad I got to play with some of these toys at Salute last year :)

And hopefully some this year ;)

Cheers Matt

John Treadaway08 Mar 2014 11:58 a.m. PST

Thanks Matt. I definitely want to do a two dayer with you at the Museum in July. I'm just getting the chaps (and chapesses) together at my end.

If it helps, kit wie, I can probably bring down what we had for Hammerhead though (or a subset of it) – depending on transport and people – we might not be able to bring the display stand.

Anyway, I'll chat to you in an email.

I'm late to the party here, but I've got to add my praise and thank yous to John for such an inspired and inspiring game. Every time I see new pics of what you've accomplished it gets me back to the table to work on things for Pat's upcoming game here in the Midwest of the U.S.

And, kudos to Pat for getting our group of guys working together for what we hope will be a momentous occasion this year at Little Wars. Keep watching the Chalanek Station blog for updates!
