Why does a helicopter ship need a ramp? Just curious. |

The skijump was in the original Spanish Juan Carlos I design, and it has been left on the Australian ships because a redesign to lose the ramp would have been more expensive than keeping it. As amphibious warfare ships they have well decks, vehicle decks and troop accommodations where a genuine carrier would have bigger hangers, larger magazines and more fuel for F-35B fighters. I wouldn't be surprised to see USMC F-35s visit one day, but there are no signs Australia will ever buy V/STOL jets. |
