I'm about to get a few of the following bits:

What other specific items do you think I can get online, that could help me finish up the device?

Thoughts?

Dan
PS. Does NOT necessarily have to be the design we know from the 1960 film. I'm open to ANY and ALL design ideas, including for a machine for more than one traveler.

Cacique Caribe02 Mar 2014 11:45 p.m. PST

These are some of the designs I've considered:

A) We are all familiar with the really Victorian-looking single chair machine from the 1960 film:

picture

B) And the single chair "cappuccino machine" look from the 2002 film:

But there are other designs out there too …

C) A fully enclosed sphere (similar in look to the spaceship used in the 1964 film First Men In The Moon):

D) An open sphere:

E) And the multi-seater "puddle jumper" look, but with some added "Victorian" elements and decorations:

Well if it doesn't have to look like the actual TIME MACHINE then, why not something like a 20 foot shipping container, where you could have supplies and such ie. guns, food, and tools and what nots, as well as extra people, you could have all the gizmos all over the outer shell, and room for the figures on the inside.

Or you can use the Stargate puddle jumper as an idea as well

I already have it downloaded just haven't gotten around to building it yet

Cacique Caribe02 Mar 2014 11:58 p.m. PST

Is this the "puddle jumper" you downloaded?

Or did you download this one?

Did you decide on whether or not to make the interior also?

link

And, are you going to add anything to make it look like it came from the late 19th century?

Dan

War Monkey03 Mar 2014 12:20 a.m. PST

No not that one but I downloaded it from link
Which the same scale

War Monkey03 Mar 2014 12:31 a.m. PST

Seems to be the second one pictured there and the two links you have there, I haven't thought about doing the interior, but I do want to detail it out much like the secound link there thought I would build a couple of them, and paint them up with more of a military scheme to them

deflatermouse03 Mar 2014 1:06 a.m. PST

Forget this clunker.

Check out this baby!!!

A possible flaw in it is able to go forwards in time, but is unable to travel backwards. But you can work around that.

MajorB03 Mar 2014 3:13 a.m. PST

No, no, no, no, you've got it all wrong! THIS is what a time machine looks like:

a time machine should be mobile

I like the "puddle jumper" idea – seems to me a lot more practical to have a time machine that you can pack gear in rather than a somewhat elegant chair – plus, if you want to, you can bring more stuff back; also if you are quite sure where you are going to land, being in an enclosed vehicle (one that is reasonable water-tight) could be a big advantage

Even better if it's bigger on the inside than it is on the outside!

Don't forget the Classic Time Machine!

Notice that the "Classics Illustrated" version actually matches Well's description, complete with sitting ASTRIDE in the "saddle."

Clearly he rather thought it was more like riding a horse, which actually anticipates the future image of a sort of time travelling motorcycle!

THAT might be the direction you would want to go with.

TVAG

(Though the George Pal version is still the most elegant Victorian item I've ever seen in on screen Science Fiction/Fantasy, with Disney's "Nautilus" a razor close second.)

John the OFM03 Mar 2014 12:30 p.m. PST

I would go with a Victorian look.
I have always thought that the main premise of VSF was that anything would WORK, given enough fuel and rivets.
They stopped working when Einstein cane along and ruined everything for everybody.

Cacique Caribe03 Mar 2014 1:37 p.m. PST

Damn that Einstein! :)

Deflatermouse, I like that larger capacity model! Plus I think it floated too.

And it even has a Roman numeral dial of some kind in the back!

I prefer the multiple-gimbals type, though that's a right pain in the butt to make.

Like this,

but each separate ring moves independently of the others. Kinda like Basileus's Machine from the movie 13 Ghosts:

War Monkey03 Mar 2014 7:30 p.m. PST

Yup I'm going to have to go with the puddle jumper myself

Cacique Caribe03 Mar 2014 8:06 p.m. PST

Perhaps with a few Victorian-ish swirls painted in bronze or brass:

War Monkey04 Mar 2014 10:01 p.m. PST

Mmmm if you put those on the puddle jumper, that might look rather cool I would think.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART05 Mar 2014 11:33 a.m. PST

CC, I hope you aren't buying pennies on E-Bay. I know of a few places to get them dirt cheap.

Cacique Caribe06 Mar 2014 4:29 a.m. PST

LOL

Guys, check this out:

Now I'm going to have to go build a scale time machine like this. Just because!

Cacique Caribe06 Mar 2014 2:03 p.m. PST

Oh, man. I don't know about yellowish the color of that water. And are all the bubbles from the jets?

Dan

War Monkey06 Mar 2014 3:56 p.m. PST

I have to agree, all those empties and the water is yellowish, not to hard to do the math there :O

Stop.

Stop, now.

Please.

Doug

Cacique Caribe08 Mar 2014 1:55 p.m. PST

Maybe that was the fuel that propelled their hot tub time machine!

Anyway, I still think they should have put all those empty containers to good use:

Hey You08 Mar 2014 8:48 p.m. PST

The "yellow water" may be an embryonic fluid substitute that helps one stay calm after a time traveling stint.

"WHOA! What just happened and where (^when) the heck am I? Oh! I'm sitting in a yellow warm bubbly fluid. That's nice. No need to panic."

Safety Not Guaranteed is a simply wonderful film in general and well worth watching. The boat mounted time machine is also interesting
