Hi, everybody. I've never played GASLIGHT before, but I'm reading the Original rules, and on page 14, the list of possible actions is:

-Shoot/Throw
-Move
-Reload

Charging is not listed. That same page outlines the turn sequence, and states "Close Combats which developed are fought." How do they develop? Do you move your troops into base contact instead of shooting, throwing or reloading?

In the section under close combat, it just says, "If the unit passes its morale, it moves up to the maximum distance as described in Movement. Is this the "move" action? Or does this happen in addition to choosing one of the three actions listed?

In the Compendium, section 6.1.1, "the GASLIGHT method," the list of possible actions is:

-Shoot/Throw
-Move
-Reload
-Rally*

Again, nothing specifically states when a charge is made.

*Also, what does Rally mean? In both the original .pdf and the Compendium, it reads: "This system is stateless, meaning that there is no explicit rally procedure."

SpacneNinjaJetPilot:

Let me first answer your questions about melee. As describe din section 6.8.1 (of the compendium) hand-to-hand combat is initiated by a charge move. If a unit passes its morale check to initiate a charge, "it moves up to the maximum distance as described in 6.4." This is the move action. All charging figures MOVE into contact with the enemy if they have enough movement to do so. If the charging unit passes its morale check to charge, has enough movement to get there, and the target unit passes its morale check to stand, melee occurs. This is what's meant by melee developing. Charging is a move action that MAY result in hand-to-hand combat at the end of the move.

With respect to rallying, recall that figures may only perform actions if they are with the command radius of their leader. When morale breaks, figures often run in different directions, and those figures that end their running away move outside their leader's command radius may not perform actions on subsequent turns until the leader moves near them.
It may take a couple of turns before the leader can get within the command radius of all his figures. "Rally" is essentially a "no action" result for the leader but allows him to have soldiers within his command radius move toward him. The leader may give orders to figures within in radius and ALSO move toward other figures that are outside his radius, or he may choose to just give orders to all of his scattered figures within his radius to move closer together, charge, or whatever. No "rally roll" is needed to determine that the unit is no longer broken, but if the leader figure merely gives commands to figures to get them doing something useful again, that is considered a "rally" action. The nuance is not terribly important. Just remember that only those figures within the command radius of the leader may execute actions and that the leader may execute his own action or merely stand around telling folks what to do. :)

Thanks, Buck!

I'm looking for a system to introduce some old friends/new gamers to, and GASLIGHT looks just right.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes.
