"New 40mm SYW moulds from Prince August" Topic

I had heard these were on the cards and they are now available. Prussian Infantry with separate heads so you can make up musketeers, fusilier and grenadiers.

Good animation, a welcome change from the march-attack standard, and the separate heads are a great idea (see HäT in 20mm).

However, if I were to move to 40mm homecast, it'd be for the extra detail over 28-30mm figures – and these don't even appear to have Prussian cuffs?

Still, if cavalry and some opponents follow, I could be tempted…

Prussian infantry had a variety of cuff types, and it would not make sense for Prince August to produce a mould for each type, the market is not large enough. The figures are generic Prussian infantry and minor variations in detail between regiments can easily be painted on.

The website states that Austrians and Russians are in the pipeline and artillery and cavalry will follow.

As to the cuffs, of course details can always be painted on – but this gets harder with larger figures. It would seem that keeping cuff flaps consistent in 40mm isn't that easy: The way it's been done in the sample pictures doesn't look very convincing to me.

The argument about a limited market (probably an understatement) and generic figures I can understand, but wouldn't it have made more sense then to include the "Prussian" cuff flaps of the senior regiments, easy enough to file away for those who wanted "Swedish" ones for their Füsiliers or the Guard, than the other way round?

As a general case (there are some exceptions) PA took the decision to leave off some details to be painted on, rather than having to file it off. I agree either approach could have been taken.

PA's initial plan is to try and cover a wide range of nations and troop types with a minimum of moulds, by taking advantage of the ability to swap heads, so there will have to be some compromises. However this range is aimed at wargamers as well as casters, so they will be taking note of comments such as these when making future additions to the range.

I am hoping they will do some heads with bearskins that I could use for the Grenadiers de France.

PA are currently working on Prussians, Austrians & Russians – French are not currently in the pipeline.

The Austrian infantry will have a grenadier head which will be reasonably close.

Thanks for the info Steve. I was thinking that an Austrian grenadier might just do it. And if they do a cuirassier with a separate head I might just try using the bearskin to convert it into a Cuirassier du Roi!
