If technology shifts again and the defensive once again out-strips the offensive, could we see a renewal of fortifications? I suppose it depends if the nanotech guys manage to outstrip the fusion guys

Depends on how you define a fortification. At it's most basic it is anything that gives a soldier an advantage compared to a soldier standing out in the open. So a foxhole is a fortification, a trench is a fortification. Soldiers fighting in foxholes or trenches will have an advantage compared to soldiers standing out in the open. In current day warfare such fortifications work just fine. Against future weapons, who knows? If you have a weapon that can slice through meters of earth like it was nothing, then foxholes and trenches aren't going to help much. But if you have tougher materials of maybe force fields that can substitute for earthworks then the same principles will apply. |
