"No Swiss fighter jets were scrambled Monday when an Ethiopian Airlines co-pilot hijacked his own plane and forced it to land in Geneva, because it happened outside business hours, the Swiss airforce said. When the co-pilot on flight ET-702 from Addis Ababa to Rome locked himself in the cockpit while the pilot went to the bathroom and announced a hijacking, Italian and French fighter jets were scrambled to escort the plane through their respective airspaces. But although the co-pilot-turned-hijacker quickly announced he wanted to land the plane in Switzerland, where he later said he aimed to seek asylum, Switzerland's fleet of F-18s and F-5 Tigers remained on the ground, Swiss airforce spokesman Laurent Savary told AFP

Aren't many Swiss AF pilots part-time reservists who have regular day jobs? I thought I read that somewhere. |

I am LOL big time, Working 9 to 5 gota make a living. No wounder The Swiss national population (note I said SWISS) is shrinking, they can only do IT during office hours, 8-D n still laughing over this, ah! humans gota love them. |

When every able bodied citizen has a rifle and ammunition at home,invasion threats are not an issue..Kinda like how nobody tries an armed heist at a gunshow. |

The whole country is only twice as big as New Jersey---and probably with way more aircraft traffic. By the time they scramble jets, the whole thing would be over anyway. |

FWIW,the airliner circled Geneva for 42 minutes escorted all the while by French AF jets who obviously spent the same amount of time in Swiss airspace in accordance to bilateral agreements. In other words, the only thing that stands between a hijacked airliner and a crash site in the middle of Geneva outside of office hours is the French Air Force
