This last week I began work on the great temple complex that is one of the terrain features I will be including in my Egyptian archeological dig collection. It is a huge piece that measures 2 feet by 4 feet. I've been collecting its components for more than six years. The temple complex is divided into two large courtyards bordered by low walls (comparatively speaking) and enclosed from front to back by three large wall sections with an inner temple area in the second courtyard. In putting this complex together I used pieces from three Great Adventure of Lost Kingdom Playsets (manufacturer unknown by me), the Fisher Price Great Adventures Hidden Treasure Pyramid, Mattel's Mummy's Gold playset, four of Scotia Grendal's Egyptian Gates, and the Scotia Grendal Pharaoh's Tomb entrance piece. The Egyptian columns in the first courtyard area are fish-tank pieces from Petco and the twin obelisks are from Summit Collection. The two large seated pharaoh statues are resin bookends I picked up at the swap meet. The exterior wall inserts are Duplos covered by Evergreen plastic. Some small detailing remains before I begin painting, but I'm very happy with how it has gone so far and hope you enjoy the pics below.[URL=http://s1082.photobucket.com/user/rgarretson/media/IMG_0666_zps53319ce5.jpg.html]

Thanks for the kind words. As I indicated above, I've been collecting the stuff for this temple for years, and so it's been a lot of fun seeing it come together. It won't really have a unified feel to it until I get it painted and that is still awhile off. Tomorrow I'm going to put the finishing modification touches on the temple and then I'll begin work on the first of two Playmobil pyramids. Once the modification work on those is done, I'll be ready to put the hobby knife, glue and putty away for awhile and get out the brushes and paint. Thanks for taking the time to write. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Richard |

That's a great looking temple. I've got some of the stuff, but the plastic parts really add character. Where did you get those? |
War In 15MM | 16 Feb 2014 1:47 p.m. PST |
Oddball, here's the breakdown of where the stuff comes from as well as I can give it. The 4 low walls (4 1/2" tall by 18" long), the 3 tall walls (10" tall x 22" long), the inner temple, and the two twin standing pharaohs are all taken from 3 Great Adventure of Lost Kingdom Playsets. The boxes provide no manufacturer name. I got two of mine at the swap meet and a guy I know wanted to get rid of his so I was able to buy the third one from him. I got all of mine cheap ($5, $8 USD, and $16 USD). My guess is they are available on ebay from time to time but I don't know nor can I guess what one would sell for. The big Pharaoh/Sphinx head entrance piece is from Great Adventures Hidden Treasure Pyramid by Fisher Price. It is on ebay from time to time and ranges in price from reasonable to outrageous. I got mine at the swap meet for $5. USD The two Anubis statues are from Mattel's Mummy's Gold playset. Again, I got mine at the swap meet for $1. USD It's commonly on ebay and Matchbox makes a version of it as well. The twin obelisks are resin and are by Summit Collection. I paid $18 USD for one new in a shop in Boston while on vacation and got the other at the swap meet for $4. USD The fish tank columns are old Petco items. They are beautiful pieces and cost about $20 USD each when they were available. If I've missed anything, let me know and I'll try to fill you in. Frankly, over the years I've been really lucky to find the stuff I have and at wonderful prices. The swap meet has been a great source of hobby stuff for me. Glad you like the temple and thanks for taking time to write. Richard |

I love the way you found all of these pieces and managed to make a coherent object out of them. We all know the feeling of seeing something and saying "that would make a great____" Since you have teased us enough, please show it after you paint it! I for one, can't wait. |

Thanks for writing and I'm glad you enjoyed the temple complex. I think this is the first time I've posted a work in progress that I knew would be part of a gallery collection I was working on. Captain, your comment about bringing it together as a coherent object is probably the reason I posted it. Because most of the temple was obtained at the swap meet of a period of years, I had no idea what would show up and so it was an evolving project. I know the big head is probably more than a little crazy and not at all accurate in terms of Egyptian temples, but the simple truth is I loved it and it slid almost perfectly on the front of one of the tall wall section from a Great Adventures of Lost Kingdom Playset. When that happened I knew I had the temple entrance I wanted
no regrets there. Today I begin working on the Playmobil pyramids. Those are big pieces too
about 14" or 15" at the base and about that height as well. One I will do very little modification to; I'm going to leave it as much as it came as practical although with both pyramids I'm adding the fourth side (Playmobil left one side open with the original toy). The second pyramid, the one I'm starting today, I'm cutting away all the cute Egyptian stuff Playmobil added and modifying it to look more like a classic pyramid. Once that is done I have 19 buildings to paint for my Egyptian town, and at least two large river craft. I also intend to do some interior settings
at least three. When those are done I will post the gallery. I have the figures painted already. I plan to have it ready to post in late April or early May. It will encompass two 5'x 7' tables; one with the town and the "Nile" and the other with the temple complex and the two pyramids. Should be fun. Thanks again for writing and for the kind words. HOLY! that super sweet – any one of those would be fun to have in a game and you have a whole table. totally jealous. ever think about leaving one of the playmobil pyramids with the side open or at least being able to remove the side – could be a hidden chamber. |
War In 15MM | 18 Feb 2014 10:09 a.m. PST |
Pete, thanks for writing and I'm glad you like the temple. Having one side or even two open is no problem. In fact I had to buy two extra walls on ebay to be able to close all sides. Both pyramids are made so they require no glue to hold them together. That is fortunate not only because it provides the option of opening up the interior, but it also allows them to be stored more easily when they are not being used. They are huge. I probably won't have an open side because I tend to do interiors as separate pieces composed of a floor and two walls sort of like a movie set. I make them so they come apart for easy storage. I did several of those types of interiors for my Victorian Gallery which you can see at link |

Thank you for the inspiration! I had to go hunt down one of the temple playsets! You must have the best swap meet in the gaming world! |

Amalric, I'm glad to be of help. When I started my website and began posting things on TMP and LAF, one of my motivations and I think its a pretty common one is simply vanity because I proud of the things I do, but I am also interested in sharing what I have found with other who are working on their own projects. That is why I go into great detail explaining what things are in terms of materials used and manufacturers. It's something I'm looking for when I look at the posts and websites of others. I'm really happy that you like the temple complex; it's been a lot of fun collecting all the piece and putting it together in what I hope will be a unified whole. You are very right that I have a wonderful swap meet. I go every weekend, and it is always an adventure. Thanks for taking the time to write and good luck with your project. Richard |
