I'm thinking it's time to paint up some Horsemen. Maybe some cuirassiers.

What are you favourite 28mm French and who makes them?

Pictors Studio16 Feb 2014 8:34 a.m. PST

I think the Perry plastic Dragoons take some beating. Although their metal lancers are very nice with the casualty pack that they make for it. It really makes a dynamic looking unit.

Fizzypickles16 Feb 2014 8:56 a.m. PST

Yeah, I'm painting the Perry Lancers casualties right now. I'm not sure Perry's are my favourite horses though.

Cuirassiers are nice, but if you play historical scenarios, not often in the fight. So, I've got chasseurs a cheval and dragoons mostly and Perry figures are great for both.

The Perry metal Cuirassiers are great, they have them in the usual action poses but also in a more "at ease" resting pose as they would be in reserve during most of the battle (and wargame). I personnaly like the Front Rank cuirassiers too, they have a real "heavy" feel about them. For light cavalry and dragoons I still prefer the "old" Wargames Foundry (also designed by the Perry's) good detail and looking light alongside my Front Rank heavies. Warning: once you start painting/collecting cavalry there is no stopping especially with the colourfull hussars. Enjoy.

Front Rank are my favorites.

idontbelieveit16 Feb 2014 9:47 a.m. PST

I prefer Front Rank as well. Hussars are great looking but require some serious patience to paint well.

The Miniature Figurines (MINIFIG) 25mm French Dragoons -- later models with the saddles cast onto the horses, not on the riders; are my all-time favorite French cavalry.

The Carabineers for me. Something about the white uniforms with Cuirassier plate rocks.

It kinda depends, on what scale you are gaming.

If you are doing divisional stuff, then really they should be either chassaurs or Dragoons, at a pinch husssars.

The heavies might be used for corps sized games but really only in full army games.

Thats IF you want to stay historic, if you just want good looking figures, then Carabiners pre. 1810 is the best.

Front Rank, Polish Lancers. Can't beat the figures or colors.
You can do blue or red?

Brian Smaller16 Feb 2014 10:59 a.m. PST

Hincliffe and Hinchliffe Foremost 28mm Dragoons at rest. There are guys with covered helmets, cloaks, rolled great cloaks, an officer with a map and telescope and even a forager with a scythe.

Chasseurs a cheval of the imperial guard. Mine are Firing line miniatures

Fizzypickles16 Feb 2014 12:38 p.m. PST

Thx guys, the consensus of opinion is that if you are fielding French, you are spoilt for choice!

What ever I paint will be going to market, I'll post some pics up in the gallery once I can make up my mind.

Thx for the input.

Lance.

You really are spoilt for choice. There was a guy who had started a project of painting one each of the French hussar regiments. That would be cool too. A lot of variety. Not sure how marketable it would be.

Dogged17 Feb 2014 12:18 a.m. PST

Perry plastic hussars. One of the best kits out there, and allows for building extraordinary miniatures, both in detail, anatomy and dynamism.

Fizzypickles17 Feb 2014 3:00 a.m. PST

The Perry Plastic Hussars, both French and British are indeed nice. I do also like their Metal cuirassiers but also like the Front Rank 'Heavies' for the same reason Marcel points out. Who doesn't like the Chasseurs? or the Guard Lancers for that matter and Carabineers do look lovely, as do Empress Dragoons lol.

Anyhoo, I'm in the mood for some Horse's, we'll see how the enthusiasm holds up after the first unit grin

Agree with Brian… I have a 24 man Dragoon regiment of the Hinchliffe Foremost. Sweet looking unit. Also Connoisseur and Front Rank Dragoon regiments. If I had to do it all over again, I'd mount Front Rank troopers on Foremost horses.

Dead ones!, c'mon, someone had to say it

hussars first, second: hussars

Fizzypickles19 Feb 2014 5:57 a.m. PST

If I had to do it all over again, I'd mount Front Rank troopers on Foremost horses.

Would the scale match? I'd have thought FR riders would look like giants on Foremost Horses?

Chasseurs a cheval or dragoons – always useful for any theater.

Gendarmes d'Elite or 2nd Eclaireurs of the Guard….cos no one makes them yet to a high standard in 28mm…and just when my conversions are done, they surely will.
