Looks like the Mongol on the American cover of Flashman and the Dragon.

I would be a little concerned that the artwork depicts a cavalryman and the miniatures are infantry.

And the period illo is dated 1799--technically not 19th Century?

Hi guys,

these are masters for the 8-banner army of the Chinese army which was established in the 17th century. They had their hightime in the 17th and especially the 18th century and came slowly to an end in the 19th century. Well some of them still fought in the Taiping Rebellion :-) while in the second half of the 19th century the much better known regular Manchu infantryman took over the role.

More information about them I have on my blog at historyin172.blogspot.com

cheers
Uwe
