I've been thinking about doing some Viking war gaming for a short while now. A couple of searches turn up plenty of references to SAGA but not any other rules. Are there any other options out there for rules? |
Stosstruppen | 14 Feb 2014 1:45 p.m. PST |
Strandhogg (not sure I spelled that right), A Glutter of Ravens, Pig Wars, SAGA. |

I believe Toofatlardies' Dux Britanniarum is supposed to get Viking raiders added at some point. |

Longships from Peter Pig and best of all Battle Troll. |

What level of Viking engagements are you looking at? |

Battle Troll. They are firmly rooted in the sagas of the Icelanders and play well. |

There is a summary of "Longships" on the PP website. It will also be put on at Salute as a participation game if you are going? martin |

Commitatus. Battle rather than skirmish. Phil |

I'm looking for 28mm skirmish. A dozenish guys to two dozenish per side. SAGA looks like the exact scale, but I'm not sure about the special dice and combo stuff. Unfortunately there is no one in the local club it seems that does Vikings, so no chance to see a game played before I buy something. |

Are you looking for a straight-forward fight, or some pillaging action? If you want pillaging action, Strandhogg is a good set of rules if you can find a copy. Here's my review of it: link |

Here's another vote for Battle Troll. |
whitphoto | 14 Feb 2014 7:27 p.m. PST |
Of course I want pillaging action! Why play Vikings if they're not pillaging! |

What punkrabbit said
I'd go with SoB&H for skirmishes. For big battles, I'd lean toward Hail Caesar. Doug |

Strandhogg is a great set of card driven rules but difficult to find. You can play either Vikings, Saxons or Normans. Battle Troll is also another card driven system and is based on the Icelandic sagas. I still haven't tried out Saga yet. |

Well, if you want pillaging action, then it's Strandhogg if you can find a copy, or Pig Wars, which you can buy from their Yahoo group, from what I can tell. SAGA is more of a straight-off fight. Dux Britanniarum has got pillaging action too, but is currently just Romano-British vs Saxons, so if you are willing to use Vikings as Saxons, and Saxons as Romano-Brit (I know, karma's a bitch), then I suppose you can still do it. |

PP Longships uses units each of 8 25mm figures. 5 units per army = 40 figures per side. Lots of new mechanisms and decisions. The game can either be pillaging or battles. Good luck with your quest. martin |

SAGA can handle pillaging too. The homeland and escort scenarios represent that, and you can always design your own scenarios as well. SAGA is going to be in the 2-4 dozen figures size wise though. My army standard army build is 41 figures. If you are coming to Cold Wars stop by the tournament area on Saturday morning and you can either watch or join in. Tom usually brings some extra armies for just that reason. The dice and combo stuff is actually a lot of fun and I have yet to see a game play out in what I would consider an unrealistic way. |

IMO, the oldest is still the best--"Pig Wars", which is available as a PDF from the author, Tod Kirshner, thru the "Pigwarriors" Yahoo group. The recommended warband per player is 20 figs; the rules require 6, 8 & 12 sided dice & a deck of standard playing cards for each player. |

Strandhogg is unfortunately "dead". You might try dropping the author an email to see if you can get a response. |

We still play Strandhogg out here in the crazy north. It can be hard to find but is an excellent rule set for playing Vikings. We paired it up with "Aeres Fire"(SP) a campaign game and it was great fun. |
Logain | 18 Feb 2014 3:52 p.m. PST |
Battletroll is excellent if you want a battle straight out of the sagas. Lots of fun. Hands down the best rule set for the period. Age of blood is a free set that has a decent campaign system and can be fun too. Similar to some of GW's old skirmish games. Very different than battletroll. |

also for skrimish level (up to about 20 a side) i would strongly recommend Brink of Battle. |

rhacelt, Do tell me more about "Aeres Fire". Google isn't helpful. Thanks. |

Do tell me more about "Aeres Fire". I suspect he meant 'Aegir's Fire', which you can download here: linkIt's in the medieval section just a little way down. I've not played 'Aegir's Fire' but I have played 'Battle Troll' with the 'Pigs and Glory' campaign rules: link We had a fantastic time with them, with much of the fun being had from people chasing sheep and pigs instead of fighting each other. |

Give Saga a try, it has a nice flavour and a system that works really well. It comes with a number of scenarios, including some with victory points from pillaging. It gives you options for different flavours of vikes and other dark age races, anglo-dane, welsh, scots etc which may help bring in others in your club. You can make up your own dice rather than official ones, so dont let tht be a blocker. We started playing it in the Oxford club about 3-4 months ago and its gained a lot of interested participants. |
rhacelt | 21 Feb 2014 6:24 a.m. PST |
Sorry about the miss spelling. It did make for some fun times. We used Aegir's Fire for the campaign and then used Strandhog for the individual battles. We made some minor modifications to both to make it work but it was loads of fun. |

"Viking Run" is a good one. Basically a bunch of Vikings in a free for all looting a Saxon village. Great convention game or a game to play with a beer in hand! |
