My intention is to use these in my Dark Ages game as a source of Strathcylde cavalry for Saga and skirmish cavalry / Germanic mercenaries for Dux Brit.

I've read a lot of things that say these are pretty ropey. I've written a review of my initial experiences on the blog here:
mitchwargaming.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/wargames-factory-ancient-german-cavalry.html

And a piccie of one that I've assembled and converted:

Overall, I think that for the price these are brilliant.

Cheers,

Here's what I did with the WF Celt cavalry box.

Very cost effective.

Jim,

Nice!

Nice reviews and tutorials. Not sure I want to take the plunge but worth noting that WF figures seem to be pretty versatile.

WATJ, some of the issues are with the soft details. Adding Gripping Beast heads (and hands perhaps) gets around this to an extent. I've had another play, and West Wind heads seem towork equally well.

West Wind sells actual head sets too right…as in packages with just some heads?

BTW, I forgot to mention, the figure would really look the part if he had a small targ or a larger shield on his left arm.

WATJ, yes, West Wind sell sets of heads: 16 or 20 in a pack, they come as strips of four and there's usually a couple of different types of strip in a set.

The rider will get a shield, but I always put shields on after I've painted everything else – I can't work with the limited access it gives me when the shield is there when I paint!
