What was the ASW mission profile of the S-3 Viking. As it is fitted with a MAD as well as sonobuoys would it have spent most of its time at low level or did the Search faciltiy mean that it was deployed at high level initially and then be vectored into a search area. The Harpoon book with the story of the high level bombing using the SAR and Rockeyes change it slightly but I wasn't sure if ops at that height were as a result of change of role or if that was how it was supposed to operate. I only ask as I am looking at basing my S-3 Vikings. Might mix them up and keep the high ones for late 1990 engagements only |

the Viking was used on a varity of missions..anti ship..armed with one harpoon and a drop tank for long range missions, 500lb bombs if needed, mk 46 torps in the ASW role..with a good mix of sonar bouys..it could go low and slow with MAD as well. Even PMC (passangers/mail/cargo) when needed. |
