If it's of use, a journalist's description of flags captured from the 2eme Legion des Francs at Fishguard in 1797 indicated tricolours with 'Liberty Tree' devices. I'd say that design would be most suited to 1798 as well.

Very intersting theme eclipsing
The only problem is that , in the majority of sources, onle the verso of the flag is shown and few descritions are available to reconstruct the recto..above all among Garde Nationale/Volontaires/pre Amalgame flags
i recently bought this beautiful French book which plates show the same limitation

But you can find inside the flags of my favourite sideshow of the period..which is the War in Vendée.
