This was a reasonably sized group game on the day before Vapnartak – and was my first game of Patriots and Loyalists

Many of you will be familiar with Brandywine, where the Americans defending the line of the creek were taken by surprise by a move around their flank.

Random allocations saw me commanding the Americans caught in the vice …

picture

… splendidly marshaled to defend the fords – and facing the wrong way wink!

Patriots and Loyalists has a variable amount of activation (randomly) available – and, inevitably, the Brits got loads of moves and were rapidly all over us …

picture

I redeployed to shoot at them, I threw units into them to buy time …

picture

… but even the time I was buying was precious little …

We were tasked with holding the fords, the high ground and the crossroads, and a determined and prolonged firefight developed at the crossroads (from behind the walls around the Meeting House) …

picture

… but on the left, my bit, we were remorselessly driven back, with first one the next, brigade giving way …

picture

… and although those tenacious patriots around the Meeting House could not be winkled out, all around them was collapsing and we had to acknowledge the Brits had carried the day.

Thanks to Steve and the Gentlemen Pensioners for a great game nicely put together. P&L seemed to do a good job and mostly felt good for the period. The melee procedure seemed a bit clunky but did get plausible results, and the firefights, which was most of it, worked well …

All in all, a thumbs up! from me.

Hey! I have that log cabin too! grin

Looks like a good game.

We all have our go-to battles to test new rules with. I like Guilford Courthouse or Germantown.

And I'll preempt Bob The 95th's comment about the Betsy Ross Flags.

C'mon. Really?

But Brandywine is a fun game in any rules system.

I was too polite to bring up the Betsy Ross flags, but I did not think that Bob would be.
Eric, you sadden me. Stooping to his level!

The game looks great. You must have had a great game.

Thanks for the positive comments – I really enjoyed the game despite being blown to bits every time I got my guys sorted into a decent position … grin

As for flags … which, where, when? The collection, staging etc. were not mine … the figures are generic and did a great job on the day. So, presumably, I'm excused debating duties on this one.

I'd like to say 'not my period', but that might be showing too much of my hand …

All the best

Phil
