They are nice but they must be on remounts acquired campaigning because they don't look like they are riding steppe ponies.

Beat me to it Brian! Just watched a BBC documentary on Genghis Khan. I think it was filmed mainly on location in Mongolia. Horses looked to be about 13 or 14 hands, rather coarse and shaggy- certainly not the fine breed shown in this model. The warriors were much less "groomed" as well.
Beautiful painting though.

I always wonder to know if Mongols, in their long raids, used captures horses.
