I am having some issues with the colour scheme for my 2nd Battalion Moravian Volunteers for my Aspern Essling Austrian Force. I have read various sources but the best I can come up with is that the unit wore infantry shakos (instead of the Corse Hat worn by the Landwehr). The volunteers seemed to have a better reputation and were not plagued by the uniform shortages of the landwehr. So far i have a brown coat, blue hungarian style breaches with red collar cuffs and turnbacks. They also had black crossbelts. I have found one or two conflicting sources that state a brown coat with red facings, white cross belts and white breeches, wlthough I think this is confused with the true Landwehr battalions. Can someone give me a definitive answer, its doing my head in! |

According to the colour reconstruction in Osprey MAA 299, Austrian Auxiliary Troops, the 2nd Moravian Freiwillige Battalion in 1809 was in brown faced red tunics, black belts with unadorned grey trousers and "stove" pipe shakoes similar to the ones worn by Grenzers with a green plume. |

Greenryth, have a look through this web site by Enrico Acerbi. You will find a lot of info on all Austrian units including battalion strengths. link |

Thanks Major
It's a great website and I use it all the time. This website has confused me more as it says they wore corse hats brown coats and white breeches. The Osprey on the auxiliary troops states as Glengarry days but the Austrian Infantry book says otherwise. I think I will go with Glengarry and Osprey 299. Thanks guys. |
