Hi all

I am looking for different rules to play naval games set during the ACW. I have found Hammerin Iron 2 from Peter Pig but there must be more rules out there. Is there anyone here that can recommend some rules or know of a website that presents different rules?

Best regards/
Conny Edman

Ironclads by Avalon Hill.

Beer and Pretzel Ironclads.

Personally I like Hammerin' Iron. Love simple rules sets and that one fits the bill.

Steam, Iron and Tin, if you can find a copy anywhere.

Age of Iron if you can find them.

Ironclads by Yaquinto/Excalibre, you meant to say.

If you can find Sail and Steam it is worthe investment. It is basically a simplified version of Ironclads. The 500+ data charts are worth it alone.

Try this link to Wargame Vault for Sail & Steam Navies. Rules include over 1000 log sheets. Also available are sets of 1/1200 scale counters.

Sail & Steam is a good set of rules, we have been having fun with them. The data cards are very nice and you get everything you could ever want or need. Even have cards for fortification!

Smoke on the Water. Free to download from the internet. Yes, you fire each gun individually, but it's not often that any ship gets to fire every gun it is carrying. More suitable for small engagements perhaps, but we get a lot of fun from just a couple of ships for each player.

Thanks Major Bumsore, for the link. Those look playable and fun. Great for a pick-up convention game, too. Thanks for sharing! Kudos to the author.

Thouroughbred may still have a copy or two of Steam, Iron and Tin laying about. It includes rules for ground warfare, also.
It couldn't hurt dropping Toby an email to find out.

Thank you all for the replys. Never thought I would get this amount of input on such a short time. Thanks again gentlemen! Now to look in to the suggestions and chose… A simple task, Not!

We use Sail and Steam – great rules. Occasionally we also use the Yaquinto Ironclad rules with the miniatures.

Beer and Pretzels Ironclads. I run them at conventions and normal game days/nights.

We use Steam and Black Powder by the St. Paul Irregulars. Very satisfying in that you actually get a result. Yes, you roll for each gun but our game yesterday had the Hartford and the New Ironsides plus the Mississippi and other mutli-gunned ships and got done in time for the Super Dud game.

There is a free Victory at Sea variant for the ACW by David Manley; Victory on the Rivers.

Mr Manley also wrote Iron and Fire which is available on Wargames Vault,

as is River Wars by Bob Johnson.

As I own but haven't played the above I'm afraid I can't offer any comment other than that they "read well".

Also worth a look is GMT Games' Iron and Oak, it's a board game played on a 5 x 5 grid, there's no reason why you couldn't play it with minis (which, like rather a lot of my board games, is something I hope to do eventually).

It was Yaquinto? Silly me!

Thanks Walt!

We are actually working on a full release of this one at the moment, powered (in part) by the VaS 2.0 rules, if anyone is interested in getting in on the playtesting…

Oooh Matt, that's exciting. VotR is a well-done set, and an official publication can only improve it.

I'm a big fan of Yaquinto's "Ironclads", but otherwise the "Sail & Steam" set from Wargames Vault is a good one.

"VotR is a well-done set"

Good production values, lousy rules…
