So I tend to send out blast emails to a set PR list of contacts. Various blogs and news sites. I also submit to those that don't just ignore them. TMP and TGN will post just about anything. Other sites are a bit more selective or concentrate on specific games.

Does formatting these emails as formal press releases make a difference? Most of the time I send something that is just a shortened version of our formal website announcement.

Anyone have any experience with sending or receiving them and their impact?

Tango bring content to TMP :) I already have that covered. I need to get listed on sites like Bell of Lost Souls and Beast of War. Magazines like Wargames Illustrated. I was in that one a few months ago.

I figure an informal announcement with pictures catches eyes better then a formal press release would but I'm not sure.

We ( 20mmZone ) have found informal lost with lots of photo's works very well for us. We often release 6 items over a working day on 4 or 5 forums. The only issue is the "Guild" who do not like us listing on 6 separate post's & want us to save them up & post in one hit.

Only press release if the target is centred in your cross-hairs. And whatever you do, never press the red button.

It makes a difference to me and I treat it with a little more curiosity.

The reason you format something as a press release is so that lazy reporters (ie nearly all of them) use your release as a template for writing their article. In local newspapers or trade magazines, they'll often simply print your release under their byline.

In your case, I think there's not much mileage in formatting your announcements this way. You're aiming to be reprinted in popular blogs and websites. So I think that other than a pithy, readable email with a couple quotable lines, your best friend will be a strong destination page they can link to. Including pictures and a detailed description.
