I'm trying to make some decent-looking all plastic Roman cavalry. I have the Wargames Factory box, and they're…. okay. Detail is a little soft, but I plan to use Warlord Roman Auxilia heads which are a little nicer, and as the human eye is drawn to the head of a mini, should help disguise some of the softness of the rest of the rider.

On the other hand, the horses used in the set aren't great. Both Warlord and Perry have sprues of horses available, has anyone tried this to see if it'll fit? Or any alternatives (I'm thinking that the GW LotR horses would be good, scalewise, but can't find any right now)?

The LotR horses are nice, but expensive. Sometimes they can be bought cheaply on eBay though.

Another possibility is the bulk sprues of 'new edition' horses from Wargames Factory – they are much sleeker and better animated than their 1st attempts at horses.

The bad news is that those have no bridles or other tack sculpted on so you would have to do that yourself with greenstuff…

Conquest Games spare Norman horses?

Thanks, I had seen the new WGF ones but I'm in the UK so the shipping for a few horses doesn't make them appealing. Thos Conquest ones look good. But I'm still after the advice of anybody who has tried them with WGF models to see if they fit (or have both models and can do a dry-fit test for me).

Riquende

we stock the Wargames Factory horse bundles and are in the UK.

They are here link

We attend shows around the UK – next up PAW – Plymouth

I have not tried a Roman on one of these, but assuming I can find my spare Roman cavalry models, will give them a dry fit tomorrow

kind regards

I think Conquest will be my first attempt at this, sadly I've not found anything anywhere about people remounting WGF cavalry, which either suggests nobody can be bothered doing it, or that nobody has any of the kits due to quality issues.

I mounted up spare WGF Celtic cavalry (for some reason you get twice as many riders as horses in the box).
I used metal horses from Navigator Miniatures. Worked fine.

As I mentioned yesterday I have located and added a Roman to the Wargames Factory 'new style' horse this afternoon

Lights got a bit poor to take a photo today so I can do so tomorrow (my flash will wash out the grey plastic too much) although it sounds like you have decided another path anyway – but if you want a pic, let me know.

We sold a Roman cavalry set at the weekend (along with a number of other sets – Samurai were popular) so folks certainly do buy them

kind regards

Okay, thanks. I'm not 100% the Conquest route will work, so it'll be good to see. Plus, I've got a future project in mind using German or Celt cavalry that might suit those horses even more.

Scarab Miniatures28 Jan 2014 11:58 a.m. PST

I can say now the model fits on the horse fine and with the advantage of plastics, you could mix the horse heads and tails up, to get more variants, I will post a pic tomorrow though

I am now off to see if using the Celt cavalry bodies and numidian heads/weapons, combined with the horse bundle set will give me a low cost set of Numidian cavalry!

I just need to check the kit on the celts.

Then the celt heads can go on the numidian infantry bodies, to give me more generic ancient tribal types.

First though start work on the information pack for the War & Conquest gaming day/weekend next month!

That's very helpful, thanks. I'll probably pick some of those horses up for some light cav conversions down the line, even if they don't work out it's not like having too many horses lying around is a bad thing.

Just have to start counting down to payday.
