I am painting up the above I bought a few years ago and have a question regarding figures carrying spontoons.

There is a long straight board or tube sculpted on and hanging around their shoulder. What is it? Is it a holder for the spontoons? What color should I paint it? Is it tin, wood?

If they are NCOs, it could be a ceremonial cane, for flogging foul miscreants. If it is, paint it wood.

"hanging around their shoulder" suggests the protective case for the colours, which the colour-bearer NCOs would carry like a shoulder belt when the colours were unfurled; black oilcloth, with a brass top at one end I think.

The other NCOs would carry their cane (less than an inch thick, so very small on a figure) suspended from a right lapel button, with the bottom end stuck into the right skirt turnback. A sewing pin would be about right for that in 40 mm.

As I recall for earlier postings on TMP, if that is a case for the colours, then the Grenadier figure is only for the single-battalion 6th Guard; or for the battalion of the 15th that wore the mitre cap (3rd?). These are the only Prussian grenadier battalions that carried colours.

Perhaps it might work for the Hessian guard battalion of all grenadiers as well?

I have a load of S&S Prussians. I think Sir John, OFM, OBE has it correct as a cane. I dont recall a color bearer grenadier. Dan's question was concerning the dude with the spontoon and a piece of detail on his uniform. If the tubular detail begins at a button and terminates in the turnbacks, then it is a cane.

Thanks everyone. I will paint it like a cane. These are NCOs with mitres and they have spontoons, not flag staffs. It is hanging on the right. It is slightly large but not big enough for a flag case. The sculptor could have made it that way for visibility.

Is this what we are talking about?

Note plate #97. If so, it's a cane.

And #96 would not be carrying a color. The grenadier companies of IR30, like all but IR6, did not have colors.

Thanks John

The figure has the cane as per 97. He is not equipped like 96.

So, John, how much do you want for your copy of Mollo's SYW book?
