Which looks better? Does it depend on the color of the vehicle?

The Gray Ghost21 Jan 2014 8:11 a.m. PST

personally I like brown wash

Chris Palmer21 Jan 2014 8:35 a.m. PST

I use brown on green or tan vehicles, and black on panzer grey vehicles.

I've tried brown but like black better.

nazrat21 Jan 2014 9:25 a.m. PST

Totally depends on the base color.

I generally use brown ink for late war British and American vehicles. I use black ink on early war panzer grey German tanks.

I used to use black for green or grey vehicles and brown for brown/tan, but really life is too short and now I just use brown for all of them. I usually do them covered in mud and dust anyway, so a brown wash just works better.

Cooler colors (grays and blues) look better with black. Warmer colors (browns tans yellows reds) look better with brown.

I agree with that joker.

I've used both based on the base color …

I use Army Painter Dark Tone (brown) on both German dunkelgelb and Allied green tanks, then matt varnished and very happy with results. I'd use the black on grey tanks though.

I know that the greens tend to look better with the black wash. Agree with the Joker on his statements. You can always do an in between color like Payne's Grey or dark brown "fortified" with some extra black.

I second Mark's comments I use Army Painter Dark Tone on all colours and it looks good to me.

There a some recently painted tanks on my blog

I prefer Payne's Grey ink wash for light coloured vehicles. gives more of the impression of shadow.

Thank you for all the insight!

Very dark blue wash looks good on panzer grey, gives a rain-washed and faded steely grey appearance. Browns on green or tan vehicles – apart from engine grilles and the like.

Here is the blue-wash effect on grey.

And brownwash on green

What about desert tanks, with desert sand paint schemes, valentines or matildas?

I think that the Brown wash works better but should i use Black Wash on the motor vents for exemple, where more grease and grime piles up?
