My bases are equivalent of 4m30(about 14ft), wide.

How many horses would be reasonable?

MajorB19 Jan 2014 9:55 a.m. PST

3 or 4 at the most. 1 or 2 if in open order. If you're talking figures though, however many will fit comfortably on the base.

I'm basically concerned whether I can get away with 2 – or I'm going to have to do a load more painting!

What actual size are your figures and bases?

Last Hussar19 Jan 2014 12:33 p.m. PST

Pendraken 10mm (prob 11mm in reality- which makes them 144;1) and 30mm square (x 144 = 4m32)

I'd put 3 figures on a base that size. Or maybe even 4 … Two figures on a 30mm wide base would look rather spread out.

I would also go with 3 or 4 – in small scale, number trump just about everything

I like 2-3 because I like a lower density for cavalry. Generally ACW cavalry wouldn't be in a boot-to-boot charge. Personal taste of mine, of course.

I have 10mm ACW figures. on a 25mm wide by 22mm (1" x 3/4") deep base I have 4 horses in line side by side. The beauty of 10mm is you can paint allot of figures real fast and have allot more on the table for battles than 15mm. The number I chose is that it is the appearance of a march column rank and the figures look about the right density for a civil war era unit in line of battle. I could see doing 3 figures, but they look a bit spread out. At 2 figures they look like an open order skirmish line like John likes.

For infantry, I have 8 figures in 2 ranks of 4 on the same sized base.

Took some photos of the undercoated figures – which is a better denisity for ACW?
