I have a variety of acrylic paints (craft paints, tamyia, testors) but the majority is vallejo. My question, is there any problem mixing the various brands? |

I have mixed various brands and never had a problem. The craft paints tend to be thicker out of the bottle than the game miniature paints. |

I've mixed Vallejo, Humbrol and Derivan acrylics without any issues, does make you aware of the different qualities they have. |

I've had some mixes come out glossy instead of flat. Nothing dull coat could not cure. |

I find a drop of water helps the colours blend. My current painting tin includes Vallejo, Humbrol (some is getting on 30 years old), GW, Revel and Tamiya. All of these mix Ok with a good stir. Edit forgot a couple of tubes of craft acrylic and a Windsor and Newton artists acrylic burnt sienna. |

I mix all sorts of acrylics all the time. Heck, you are only doing a few drops at a time. If your experiment goes awry, remember to not do it again. |

Only issue is with some of the airbrushable plastic model ranges – Tamiya, Xtracylic and Mr Color – these seem to be more temperamental – I only have a few with authentic colours for aircraft and ships which I don't need so often, but the seem to prefer their own types of thinners and can go glossy if mixed. But most of the mainstream ranges seem fine, i've mixed Humbrol, Foundry, Vallejo and Lifecolour no problem. I also have a big dispenser of Winsor and Newton Galleria white, which i sue for lightening other colours, no problem – and craft paints and tubes too. As john says its all about experimenting. I'd like to try the White Ensign range – any reports? |
