I went to see Lone Survivor this weekend and was pretty impressed. "They" said it was supposed to be the best war movie since Saving Pvt Ryan, (pretty tall talk from a one eyed fat man)- but it was pretty close.
The director and Mark Wahlberg did a great job with the script and story, and the S.E.A.L. who the book was based on was not only the tech advisor, but was actually in the movie, which I thought was cool.
It has plenty of action, great stunt work and virtually no "Hollywood moments" ie. in Top Gun when the guy says "the catapults are "broken" they will be down for 10 minutes.
Four out of five stars.

I too saw it and thought it was a great movie.

They did mispronounce Chinook once though…
other than that A+

I worked on the visual effects for this movie. I did point out some inaccuracies (the howitzer on the AC-130 firing 2 rounds/second, for instance) to the powers that be, but realism will often take a back seat to what looks cool. There were other considerations at work here too, largely to do with the fact that VFX happens at the very end of the production chain. I feel like the people making the movie were committed to making it accurate, and by the time it got to my desk it was too late to change some things.

The high tech communications gear they carried didn't work so well. I thought that seemed realistic. I've never used those particular pieces of equipment shown in the movie but can relate to the frustration of high tech devices not working as advertised.

Good on ya then snodipous- I didn't notice that it looked like a 40mm bofors to me I didn't catch that, and I guarantee the civilians didn't notice.
You guys did a fine job on this- I think the director has made a name for himself with this one.

Couldnt agree more Grossman. I read the book and the first 90% of the movie was spot on. I did feel like the last 15 minutes went a bit hollywood (no spoilers).

Overall I rate it 9 out of 10. Reminded me quite a bit of Blackhawk Down. Acting was really good, Ben Foster (Axe) in particular. Tribute at the end made me tear up both times I saw it.

Wish Hollywood produced more movies like these.

I met Marcus at a conference where he gave a speech about his experiences on that mission. I decided right then and there that I have never had a bad day in my life.

Peter Berg, the director, was also one of the chief actors in "A Midnight Clear" from about 1999 (?) -- one of the best WWII movies I've ever seen.

Any one else see a post from tango on Swedish regiments up there?

Movie sounds good though.

Everyone gets upset that tango never posts in threads… Then something priceless like this happens.

I LOVE TMP

A conversation about grenadiers is always relevant in any thread…
@ piper 909 I think I saw that- a little creepy, late war vs Germans in the snow? Pretty good movie if I recall.

Of course my comment was other (smile).
A bug attack!.
By the way, I enjoyed the movie a LOT.
Really moving and with a real combat stress all the way.

Just for your info – the AC-130H has two 20mm Vulcans, a Bofors 40mm and a 105mm. (The former AC-130H crew chief reminds folks.) :)

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I do plan to do so.
