I'm scared to look at the link
I just love my Patrick O'Brien novels and have thought many times about playing this type of warfare
so this could be more temptation than I could resist
please don't look

I've not yet seen the ships on sale in the UK but if they are like the planes the price we pay in Sterling will probably be about what they are in USD, making them very expensive over here. A shame, if they were very reasonably priced I'd be tempted. I know I can make better looking ships from metal kits but I liked the idea of not having to bother. I'll wait and see what they are costing in the UK before making a final decision though. In spite of my expected non-participation I hope this is a big success for ARES and I hope those who have bought into it enjoy it. |

I bought one, it is a really fun game. We tried with one ship each with two hours to learn and play. We came to a satisfactory end, I was outmaneuvered

$70.00 USD+ (pre-release price) for the game (with 4 ships in a scale that I have absolutely no interest in (I've got enough 1/1200s and 1/2400s, thank you))? Unless someone wants to take the ships off my hands, then no thanks. If the rules and ship logs were available separately, then maybe. But until then, I'll pass

Well, having assembled, primed, painted, rigged and based hundreds of 1/300, 1/600, 1/900, 1/1200 and 1/2400 sailing ships over the years, it was the very idea that I'd not have to do so that sold me on these (smile). I've watched both my sons refuse to learn how to paint miniatures, although they'd play a miniature game if given no choice (smile). I've been able to get grandson to play any number of games using pre-painted figures, tanks, ships and aircraft. He loves the history, likes to play (actually demands a game each week) and is not burdened by the need to buy and spend the time to build things. Have eight (8) ships coming and the starter set. Will plan to add more SOL and any interesting frigates/brigs/smaller ships. A table cloth, the rules, ships and an opponent, instant game. Dan |

Like Wings of Glory, Sails of Glory is not really intended for the hard core simulation gamer or the button counting scale modeler. If you're a Close Action/Wooden Ships & Iron Men/Beat to Quarters gamer with a collection of ships, this may not be for you. However, if you're in the market for a game that is quite simply a fun game with enough "flavor" to make it interesting, this should merit consideration. It looks good on the table and is simple to learn and fun to play. The price tag isn't over the top, in my opinion. This is the 21st century and we've seen the cost of everything go up over the years. The price, compared to other games with a similar amout of "stuff" in the box is not outrageous. I've read some people thing the individual ships are expensive. However, while they are a little more than a Wings of Glory two seater, they are a little more model too. I don't know about delivery problems--mine came quickly and intact. The game mat was delivered at the sme time as the big box. The only issue I had was that it was shipped over the holidays while I was on vacation. It was a simple matter to pay UPS the requisite $5 USD per box to change the delivery date. I just chalked that up as an additionsl cost of the vacation. I should have bought an additonal mat. The mat is very nice. What was I thinking? Oh well, theWarStore has them up for preorder, so I did. I don't think they have an expected date of availablity yet. I also want to buy a boat load (sorry for the pun) of the smoke markers. But they don't seem to be orderable yet. If someone knows where they can be ordered please reply. Are they made by Litko, perhaps? I'm looking forward to many games of SoG (just like WoG) in the future. I'm looking forward, also, to the Constituion and and the HMS Victory in a few months. |

XRaysVision, If you click on the link to my blog there are links at the bottom of the article where you can order additional smoke clouds as well as the other wooden accessories. The same person who does many other WoG play aides was contracted by Ares to do the SoG accessories. He also runs the WoG and SoG forum pages. The official street date was Monday for everything else and I am starting to see it in stock many places. HTH, Aaron |

I've been tempted to get back into Napoleonic Naval (used to play Wooden ships and Iron Men) and I really enjoy WoW/WoG so I I've watched the development of SoG with interest. The mechanics look good enough to give an entertaining and reasonably realistic game – I'm not into uber reality in this area – so they should be OK for me. But there's always a catch – £69.99 GBP is a killer! |
