Hiya all! I just finished my first batch of Finnish Riflemen from the Baker Company Kickstarter. I decided to paint them a bit different way from most of the ones I've seen by painting a warm white snow suit starting from Khaki. Went a bit overboard with the highlights though so it actually looks a bit too clean. Well maybe they are new arrivals at the frontlines with their shiny suits. Not the best minis I've seen, but good tabletop quality. Though there are some sculpts that are just plain ugly and weird. More pics and some ranting on my blog if you are interested.

Good paint job. I agree about the sculpts, I went in on the KS as well. Some figures are good, others
..less so. However, this is just a small gaming sideline for me so I'm not too fussed and the price was certainly right. |

Looking good. Indeed the camos look a bit on the clean side but, like you said, some troops did have, at least for while, clean camos :) Heh, some younger replacements that arrived to, IIRC, Vuoksi had painted their helmets white which got them branded with the nickname of "porcelain boys" (which also probably sort of referenced to their young age -ie. no pubes
) A minor detail (but quite achievable in this scale):
The cockades could do with white dot in the center. To get examples of Finnish cockades do a Google image search with: suomi kokardi link |

Thanks guys! Yeah I decided to save myself a bit of pain by not painting the final white dot as it won't be seen from a gaming table anyways. Even though I'm a Finn and slightly fanatical with accuracy I allow myself to skip these tiny details to keep my sanity :P I might still add some dirt to these guys so that they don't look like coming straight out of the battalion storage room with brand new gear. But we'll see. Maybe I'll do a test on the next batch |

Your work is inspirational. While patiently waiting for my KS Finns to arrive, I broke down and bought some from Brigade Games, just so I could practice some colors. When the muses are singing, I listen. In the movie "Winter War" the Finnish troops were filthy, and got dirtier as the movie progressed. I painted mine accordingly. Then, looking at the real pictures, I see almost all the Finns seemed immaculately clean, all the time. Made me wonder if "muddy knees" just doesn't happen much when the temperatures are forty below zero? |

Yeah you don't get that dirty when it's really cold. Usually in the army most of our snow suits were dirty, but it was more of a uniform yellowish-brownish from wear and getting wet. In around -20 or something you only got some small amounts of dirt stuck on the knees if you managed to pick some place to be which didn't have much snow and certainly not as much as in the movie. But then you normally don't get tons of dirt thrown onto you from artillery fire etc. With the wartime photos, most of them are taken for propaganda purposes so you'd expect the better equipped guys to be in the photos. |

Wouldn't the arty fire keep the mud churned up? As opposed to undisturbed snow during peace time. |

You can probably fix the monkey boy figure by putting a little putty on his face and making it look like a cover for his face. |

Pics blocked at work as usual
grrrrr. Looking forward to recieving my KS bundle at some point! |

Korvessa: Yes arty would blast a bunch of dirt around all the time. But it would still mostly be dry. And during Winter War they had so much snow that the effectiveness of arty was hindered quite badly because the snow cover limited the blast and shrapnel. The Dozing Dragon: Weird, I see the pics on the thread |

I can see them now from home but work blocks a lot of stuff
..lucky I can actually get onto TMP
no other forums get a look in :( |

Also don't forget that the guys ostly lived in korsus. Which certainly weren't -40 below :) Get back to a korsu from the immaculately now and you're bound dirty your pristine camo in no time. Also very good points regarding the earth artillery has spread around. Plenty of pics show guys, in front, wearing realy REALLY dirty camos.

Thanks guys! Lonkka: Good point about the Korsu's. Need to tweak these guys later. Maybe when I'll get the next batch done too. |

Not everyone needs to be dirty either
If the rule system uses experience the camo painting could be an excellent way of distinguishing between ,say, veteran, experienced and green troops.
Green = clean camo Experienced = Some smudges Veteran = Dirty as hell |

Lonkka: Good idea with the troop quality. Might actually start using that one :) Anyways I've got a new batch done. This time an LMG team and the platoon command. I applied quite a heavy dose of mud onto them. First time I've really tried to paint mud on infantry instead of only tanks. So any tips are very welcome in that regard! More rambling and images can be found on my blog for those interested.
