Would these have been painted as per the rest of the motorcycle or natural metal?

All the British and German examples I can recall seeing in the flesh have been painted.

Definitely painted.

Army 101 for civilians: If it moves, salute it; if it doesn't, paint it.

Somebody else here said it first (I forget who) the army paints everything. Including shovels – that we all like to paint like the one in our garage.

There are practical reasons to not let bare metal remain. Minimises reflections that can be spotted. And helps keep off rust. Civilian vehicles might use chrome or nickel plating to protect against rust.

But "bare metal" would not normally apply to any production vehicle (you might see it on a jury rig, I guess).

Yes, INCLUDING shovels! Sorry for all you AFV modellers who waste hours putting a natural wood finish on vehicle tool handles ;)
