link My wife's great uncle found this carte de visite in a junk shop. I think he's almost certainly Second Empire, but I can't tell much more than that. Any ideas? |

Is the back accessible? Sometimes carte de visites have the photographer and maybe a date on the back. You might get REALLY lucky. I have about 20 c-d-v photos originally belonging to my GGGF (85th Holstein Regt). One of them has a printed label with the name and rank of the subject. Duncan |

Looks like a Garde Nationale Sedentaire. Could be any of a number of emergency units thrown together to defend France after the debacle of the Imperial phase of the war though. |

Looks like Garde Sedentiare to me as well. There is nothing distinctive about the uniform, so the best clue is the rifle. It is difficult to tell from the web image, but it looks like a Tabatiere converted breech loader, rather than a Chassepot. These tended to be issued to second line National Guard troops during the Republican period. These rifles still had a percussion type lock. Hope that helps! |

Could be either a Garde Nationale or a Garde Mobile, with a Tabatiere. The GN and GM both used any rifle they could find, including Remingtons, Winchesters and Chassepots, as well as Tabatieres. |
