I have been looking all over the place for Nile Gunboat articles that covered Action Reports, included manufacturers etc. I am going to start a Nile Rebellion Campaign in a month or so. Anyway, I decided to build my own Gunboat after looking at all of the pictures I could find. I call it the Cairo and will be building more of them because I just love to build. Here is my blog with some pictures on how I built this 24" x 6" boat for my 28mm TSAF gaming. I plan on not missing another of Larry's Colonial Barracks conventions in New Orleans. Any suggestions on build, design, tools, parts and ship fittings I definitely welcome. Here is the link: link |

Nice – though for the Nile wouldn't it be a stern or side wheeler? Of course, since I game pre-1900, maybe they had screw driven boats that I am unaware of in early times. Do like the way you showed the work, warts and all. Look forward to further efforts. |

The widest selection, the best prices, for Gunboat weapons and ship fitting is still the Houston Collection from TVAG. link For inspiration and information, you may also wish to tour the Houston's Gallery of photos of his countless Gunboat (and other) models, many of which are various Nile types. Here is the link Good luck on your projects! TVAG |

Amazing work, Dan! Great build and awesome tutorial. Like Early Morning Writer, I'm not sure how it runs without stern or side paddle-wheels (my only suggestion would be possibly adding one or the other), but it looks wonderful! I'm hoping I'll be able to join you at the 2014 Colonial Barracks. Haven't returned since you and I were both there at the inaugural ball, so to speak, back in 2011. Really hope to see you there in November. |

Thanks everybody. Just a note that I was going for the gunboat Sultan or Melik design. The new one I am working right now is a small side-wheeler and I will post something when I am done. Man I love playing Colonials! link link |

Great links, especially the second one to the Melik Society's homepage! Thanks for posting them, Dan! PS I figured you had built your "Cairo" as a more modern screw-driven craft from the 1890s, but now I'm very excited to see how your side-wheeler turns out! |

Screw steamers were well established by the middle of the 19th century. Even if side or rear designs were locally common, a screw steamer would not be remarkable. |
