A few years back I saw some cute ancient armies made
of wood craft bits. I think there was a game at Historicon?`
Anyone know what I'm talking about and have a link?

I haven't seen any ancients like that, but I've seen Napoleonics made of various shapes of wood, cut to size, glued together and painted. I used to have a link for the rules and a description of how to make the figures, but I've long since lost it.

Matt Kirkhart and I put on a Zama game using these figures.

Here are the couple of posts I've done on the subject including some info on what I used for the Punic army. link

I did a guest spot on Dale's Wooden Warriors blog. There is a ton of information there. Dale does make some brilliant stuff! wooden-warriors.blogspot.com

Finally, join the wargaming on a budget. You will find all sorts of posts on the subject. link

"Who asked this joker" nailed it. The yahoo group calls them crafties (made from craft store items).

Yeah, at first glance I started to dismiss them…then decided I really like them. :)

These aren't the ones I was thinking of – I hadn't seen these before either. At one of the cons I saw a SYW or AWI kids' game put on with wooden figures. I don't remember how the arms were done but they were plugs with a triangular piece of wood for the tricorn. They were quite clever and very nice looking. Wish I still had the info on it.

No, these were all made from scratch and cut from dowels and other various shapes of wood, then glued together.
