Howdy all,

Did my first solo/test game of Mighty Armies. Human vs Orc, each side had 1 artillery, 2 archers, 4 heavy infantry and a general. I took a picture of the aftermath. The units are labeled cardboard cut outs.

The Orcs won with their artillery and an archer remaining. To summarize the battle, the Orc archers and artillery killed the human archers early. But the human battle line decimated the Orc infantry group, the first orc casaulty being the General himself. It looked like the Humans would steamroll the entire orc army. However, the orc archers and artillery managed to kill the last human soldiers at point blank range.

MVP would be the orc artillery. It killed the enemy artillery and most of the other humans. Looking back, I should have targeted the artillery first because although powerful it dies easily.

Yes, that above picture is using white t-shirts as map boundaries… Anyways, my plans for mighty armies are to cut my game mat into two 2x2 squares and one 4x4 for larger battles. They can still be set up next to each other for 6x4 (or I hope so anyways). Or I might just make my own 2x2 boards with wood boards. I will make my own templates for the forests using some felt or mdf or card or something as I don't really like the shapes that came with the GF9 forest. Will try chopping them up first, who knows what will hapen.

I am modifying the forests as well by take out some of the small trees and replacing them with pine trees. I figure I'll save the small trees and whatever left over pines for a castle or town. Eventually I am going to make some buildings as well. Balsa wood, foam core and some cardboard or card should make nice looking buildings. I am going to use the blighthaven picture as a reference.

The hills and the pine tree (modded some of the tree bases) came from some eslo terrain i bought on ebay. I did not realize the eslo stuff was a different color than the gw game mat. I think I will save the trees and throw the rest minus a hill or two away. The eslo terrain I bought inspired me to make my own terrain. I bought a hot wire cutter and some foam board and will make my own hills.

I still have the last of my demonworld minis coming in the mail, then I'll make the armies. I can actually paint 15mm to a decent enough standard. There's a feller where I live who is also into war games so hopefully I can recruit him for the next MA game. Both Orc and Human armies should be finished soon. I plan to dip them in some minwax stain. Dipping works really well on 15mm.

As to my thoughts about MA:
Originally I thought a 2x2 table was too small for a wargame, but it works out nice. Infantry moves very slowly so I can see why summoned units have their uses. Movement is important so I think I might add some cavalry to my orc list. I like the splintered light orc cavalry too. It should be fun adding flying units and spellcasters into the mix.

Thanks for reading. My next report will have fully painted armies and two human opponents.

What method did you use to play solo? Does the rules come with a mechanism to play solo.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Mighty Armies, a great set of rules that does not need much room to play. One of my favourite sets of rules.

msanders – the rules do not come with solo mechanics, as far as I recall.

Great stuff, keep the hills and stick them under the mat.

How do they compare to HoTT as a rules set? Is there a download of the rules or is it purchase only?

There are quite a few that play HoTT here locally. It is okay but I would like something with a bit more meat but a set that isn't too complicated at the same time. I need to be able to field custom armies if I want too, so some sort of a points system would probably be best.

Have been eyeing Mighty Armies more for the figures than anything else. If the rules are an improvement over HoTT, then this would be a big bonus. The figures are really, really nice!

@Ancientsgamer- Mighty Armies is a great game! I wholeheartedly recommend you pick up the game and all the expansions. It does have a DIY system which I use and you can also start by using the pre-statted armies from Rebel Minis. I actually just ordered my first 15mm MA army from Rebel Minis a little while ago. While my buddies and I usually play in 28mm, I've been wanting to build up several 15mm armies for ease of use ans transportability. As I said, give it a go!

Awesome! I really dig those trees! They look easy to transport!
