I've been very busy with Xmas-related activities, so haven't had time to post recently. Can I wish everyone a belated Merry Xmas, and best wished for the coming New Year!

These are some stunningly painted Foundry Romans I recently purchased off Saxon Dog, and re-based.

They are rather lovely. And I'm pleased to see them. I painted an army of Peter Pig 15mm Romans and did them with blue shields and my oh-so-clever friends told me they should be red. Obviously blue is just fine :)

Thanks chaps!

David, I'm afraid they are grey. Allen Curtis used to tell me off whenever I posted blue shields!

Cheers, Simon

Ps happy New Year Mike, and all!

and why not blue shields? There is no evidence that Roman shields are all red. It is particularly possible that legions with a maritime connection would have blue.

Great looking figures.

Great brush work; anyone would be proud to have those in their collection.

It was to do with blue pigments being expensive… mind you, the Late Romans had blue shields on the Notitia, so presumably they must have had a source for a relatively in-expensive blue, and by extension there may well have been a blue in the earlier period.

Come to think of it I have 2 Praetorian cohorts, 4 ex-marine cohorts, a Caesarian cohort, two auxiliary cohorts and half an ala with blue shields. I clearly didn't worry about Allen's comment too much! Blue looks good on a shield.
