I've just finished a 54mm French Napoleonic Line Artillery unit by All the King's Men Miniatures. If you are considering painting 54mm Napoleonics, you just can't go wrong with All the King's Men miniatures.

They really look great, Steve. Though I like them all, I think 54mm (preferably in metal) is definetly the One True Scale, and your work helps reinforce my prejudice! All the King's Men seems like a great company. Unfortunately I'm not a Napoleonics/AWI/1812/ACW gamer so I haven't made any purchases…yet. Thanks for sharing!

You should see my AWI collection. I've also got FIW Native Americans and enough "patriot/militia" for a knockdown smackdown in the Daniel Day Lewis style! I've had a blast painting both plastics and metal. The new primers make painting on soft plastic a breeze.

Thanks for the compliments! I am definitely a fanboy of All the King's Men.

Outstanding!

I wish I could see that AWI collection--sounds great. Is there a primer you recommend for plastics? After some bad chipping experiences years ago, I've stayed away from plastics to focus on metal 54's. I'd love to know your formula.

Primer (brand?)--paint (typical hobby paints?)--overcoat? Do they hold up? Must say you've got me thinking…

Merry Christmas!!

Awesome post, Steve! Thanks for sharing these. I am coincidentally painting my own set of these guys right now, too. The cannons are proving extremely hard to get from Del Prado, such that I am gonna go with a gun from Stockade Miniatures/Soldiers of the World, who also happen to be the creators of these figures. I have arranged to license them for the wargame market. The figures will go live as soon as I have the gun locked down. I have 4 of the DP guns left. Anyone interested in a set of these with the cannon Steve shows, let me know and we can discuss. -- Ken

Please send me another set with the DP gun. Can't have enough arty!

Primer on plastics? I use Rustoleum Flat White and have great success with lack of chipping. I also basecoat/block out basic colors, then brush on a coat of Minwax Royal Walnut (Polyshade), shoot the finished figure with a shot of Dullcote, highlight them, shoot them again with another Dullcote shot. Seems to work and since I'm not working on these under the gun of "gotta' have 'em for a con or a particular game", the extra steps are worth it to me. These are keeper figures and will get passed on to my son. Hopefully he'll appreciate them and not sell them.

Later and y'all have a GREAT Christmas from Tejas!

I forgot…I paint all my figures with Vallejo acrylics. I ditched all the other (GW and Wal-Mart) paints. Also use a line from Asel Art Supplies called Crown Acrylics. They're deeply pigmented and just work like a champ. I've found lately that Reaper's Master Color-Pure Black is the primo choice for black. I like its one coat coverage. It tends to dry quickly so I will thin it down with H2O or some Vallejo Acrylic Thinner. Ok..I've pontificated enuf' today. I'm ready to start cookin' Christmas dinner!

Thank you, Steve, and good luck cookin'!
